Weird Science: NY Times Mag’s “Planet Hillary”

• Well, it was a lot more interesting than the Justin Bieber mug shot.

• Huma’s Dark Matter? Calling Mark Leibovich.

From the chatter, most wrote this off as simply oddball. There are several discomforting allusions here, though: Hillary as weird science, as beyond us, as light years old, and as androgynous. (If there’s any symbolism with some real gravitational pull here, I’d say it’s the man in the moon.) If you can say anything definitive about this, however, it’s that NYT Mag won the internet by turning Hillary and the early wave of Campaign ‘12 speculation (and a slow news stretch) into a celestial Rorschach for everyone to play. There actually is one specific stereotype this echoes though. Perhaps we’re in for further fixation on “the Hillary laugh.

But beyond that, I don’t think it ever helps coming off as “other.”

Disembodied, in her (its?) own orbit, and of a planetary system that relates to the little people here on earth, how? I am already dreading the 2016 circus.

this makes me think of the genre of “yo mama is so fat” jokes, because there’s one in which “the other mama’s orbit around her”. I guess they’re going for a variant of the “big player” theme which is based on “gravitational pull,” but it’s certainly a strange and off-putting characterization! hard not also to see illusions to her as a witch, maybe summoning chaos along the lines of the Magician’s Nephew.

whew! I felt that the Clinton – Obama race was relatively high-minded, but even at this remove Hillary certainly pushes a lot of strange buttons. that galactic business to the right looks like the right-wing establishment going nuclear . . .

Daily Show did a similar visual the other night with Christie in moonface a la “The Honeymooners.”

It’s not a flattering look for anyone.
