Prom Night, 1979

So by now (2013; second term), these mean nothing. Agree or disagree?

Okaaaay. Obama’s prom pics. My first reaction is: interesting, but so the hell what?

I suppose someone could make something of the champagne bottle in the background. But it was 1979. The drinking age was still pretty generously low. It doesn’t sound like they were out binge-drinking.

His afro was a tad too long? What? (See: late ’70’s hairstyles).

I suppose that someone who wanted to be critical could find something to scream about. But it’s teenagers going to a prom. Nothing here that hasn’t been done by millions of others.

Obama was dating a white girl, perhaps? Hmmm. I could see that certain people of a certain generation would be scandalized by that. (See: my MIL: All brown people are scary.)

My questions are: how did the press get ahold of them? What was Kelli’s thoughts in releasing them? I’m guessing she hasn’t had much experience with the press. ;)

The Seventies! I saw Obama drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic’s. Oww-oohh.

I’d like to know what became of the other three people in the picture.

Seems like a useful distraction for the POTUS/press/easily distracted rubes from the “scandal/s” du jour… My .02.

The only person (or, people) I can imagine these pictures, or the Time piece resonating for is (are) Michelle Obama (Barack’s daughters). Ho-hum, Time.

Strangely all that comes to mind are recent comparisons (false, wishful thinking) comparisons to President Nixon. A man who apparently was so uncool in high school that he chaperoned his future wife on dates with other boys. A man so vindictive and paranoid he actually did order the IRS to pursue his “enemies” both in the political world and members of the press.
