BagNewsSalon: “Unnecessary Roughness: Football as a Reflection of American Culture”
This BagNews Salon, co-sponsored by The International Association for Communication and Sport (IACS), featured a distinguished panel of sports scholars and photojournalists analyzing a select edit of media photos dealing with football and American culture. Held the Sunday before the Super Bowl, the Hang Out focused on a broad range of themes, including power and violence, commercialism, patriotism, militarism and gender roles.

Moderator:
Michael Butterworth, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Bowling Green State University. Mike is also the Executive Director of the International Association for Communication and Sport. His research examines the relationships between rhetoric, democracy, and sport.
Panelists:
Dan Grano: Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Dan’s research examines issues in rhetoric, race, and political identity in sports.
Marie Hardin: Professor and Associate Dean in the College of Communications at Penn State University. Marie is also Associate Director of the Curley Center for Sports Journalism. Her research examines diversity, ethics, and professional practices in sports.
Ken Jarecke: photojournalist and author of “Husker Game Day 2010: Farewell Big 12,” a definitive look at Nebraska’s final season in the Big 12 Conference, available here. (A look at Ken’s extended coverage here).
Tom Oates: Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication and the Department of American Studies at the University of Iowa. Tom’s research examines issues of power and identity in sports.
Scott Strazzante: Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist for the Chicago Tribune. Scott just covered the BCS championship game.
