New Year’s Eve Juxtaposition of the Day

Josh Haner the herd

Carson Daly New Years Eve

Posted minutes apart this afternoon on Instagram. Because, we’re hoping for a little less conventionality in 2013.

Happy New Year from The Bag!

Not quite sure how to connect those two images. The classical read may be from Milton:

The hungry Sheep look up, and are not fed,
But swoln with wind, and the rank mist they draw,
Rot inwardly, and foul contagion spread:
Besides what the grim Woolf with privy paw
Daily devours apace, and nothing sed,
But that two-handed engine at the door,
Stands ready to smite once, and smite no more.

Don’t know anything about Mr Daly or his show but his genre, mass market TV, can certainly stand in for the clerics of Milton’s time and serve as a target for this awesome verbal assault from the same source:

Blind mouthes! that scarce themselves know how to hold
A Sheep-hook, or have learn’d ought els the least
That to the faithfull Herdmans art belongs!

‘Course my first thought on seeing those sheep looking so obedient and so harmless was Newton CT meets The Silence of the Lambs. Not a cheery way to start a New Year.

One of my favorite scenes from all of cinema is the three holes of light from the bullets a trembling Clarice Starling delivers through the heart of a menacing psycho Buffalo Bill. Not an argument for guns for all but an acknowledgement of a time and a place for deadly force in the hands of trained law enforcement.
