Campaign ‘12: The Scream

What’s brilliant about Brian Snyder’s shot of the girl at the Romney rally is how it ropes us in through different senses at once.  According to the caption, the girl is cheering with all her might for candidate Romney. Not knowing that, however, what a wonderfully visceral example of  what close cousins passion and pain are. In these final hours and in my gut, I find myself being swung back-and-forth across the same delicate line. Don’t you?

I’m also interested in your other thoughts, as there are certainly other things and themes at play here.

Doesn’t look like play to me, doesn’t look like the girl is enjoying herself. When I was that age I didn’t much care for adult events centered around someone else talking, me listening. (“Heard, not seen” was the informed opinion in those days.) Having a couple of flag props would have been cool. When I was that age any “passion” I might have had in this context would likely have been motivated by me mimicking a parent or admired adult.

In a few years this little girl will discover the 2020 version of Frank Zappa from the mid 60’s and her Romney days will be nothing more than an odd, weird memory.

Looking at the picture without knowing the caption, my first reactions were that she might have been yawning (I’m with bdb on the boredom of adult events — they still bore me!), or that she might have been using the flags to stifle a sneeze.

Those flags almost look like spears. Patriotism as a weapon. Also, the little girl’s mouth squeezed between two flags makes me think of the two sides of the debate, and trying to talk through the noise from either side.

She’s on her father’s shoulders, above the people in front. Kids can get excited if their parents are extroverts. Romney’s current exhortations are meant to rile the troops, as far as I can see.

reminds me of the faces caught on camera of riders on roller coasters, when we thought apes were smiling until we see people scared, both look alike but with some differences .my own unscientic theroy is kniwing how long the set up for political events and how boring this is,my guess she is tired and wants to go home, she is not having fun close to temper tantrum
