Newsweek’s “Jesus in Time Square”: Is There a Larger Meaning Here?

I don’t know about you but it’s very hard for me to consider this photo-illustration in terms of the text premise, especially set as it is in New York City in the middle of the street in Times Square. It does feel like they’re on to something though.

Let’s see. You perch a Guy Fawkes mask on his head and get Occupy. You darken his skin a little, put a hood on his jacket and get a civil rights activist. You give him a three-cornered hat and get a Tea Partier. You put a HOPE button on his jacket and get a four-year member of Obama for America. Is this cover about an American failure of leadership or purpose?

This is fairly standard evangelical imagery. All the evangelicals believe they’re following Jesus instead of a church; it’s rhetoric they all use. The problem for them is that they’re churches telling you this.

Andrew Sullivan is gay. Perhaps this is an article about how Christians should quit hating gays, after the example of Christ.

A white, long-haired, crown-of-thorn sporting JC is standard Christian imagery, yes, but I’m not so sure that it’s of the evangelical-Protestant variety as much as it is Catholic. And with Sullivan being Catholic, the message to break with the Church is provocative: in Catholicism, the Church is the mediator between God and humanity. Sullivan is effectively making the same individualist “protest” as Martin Luther made.

WIth regard to the imagery, Stephen Prothero. takes up the long tradition in the U.S. that involves co-opting Jesus into contemporary narratives, and here we have an enactment of that tradition that relies heavily on hipster fashion. Which, I think, has a lot to say about the evangelical temptation toward cultural fads and urban relevancy.

What struck me immediately is the subhed up top, “Hidden Stories of the Titanic.” You have Jesus, you have “hidden stories” (parables) and you have the Titanic, itself a parable about human pride laid casually low by an afterthought of nature–all connected to “Follow Jesus” by the font color.

Sullivan can follow Jesus; me, I’m going with Derrida.

I think the headlines on the left have more direct relationships to gospel, evoking betrayal, earthly dominion and racial strife.
