Stephen Crowley’s Extraordinary Photo of Santorum at an African-American Church

A wonderful shot by NYT’s Stephen Crowley of Santorum’s train wreck addressing a black church in Florida.

1. God, please tell the Pastor to let us have our cellphones!

2. Hopefully Rick, you and your friends will think twice next time about all the food stamp baiting.

3. The campaign has been full of photos making fun of the candidates but this is something more genuine, honest … and disturbing. It’ a true “emperor’s new clothes” moment, not to mention a brilliant example of the photojournalist refusing to play along.

Via NYT Florida primary slideshow.

Wow, not a single eye on right-leaning Rick!

Santorum’s santorum must be pretty strong…it wiped out the front row of the choir.

    wow. left me breathless.

Wow, tough crowd. I’m almost embarrassed for him, but not quite. The choir looks like they are being, well, preached to, but it doesn’t look like they are enjoying it.

This is intentional disrespect—these people are up in front of the church every week and know fully well how to behave there—but they, even the kids, are deliberately not doing it.  This is a great photo.  Simply great :)

At first I thought, “Look at the choir director fanning the little boy.  It must be really hot up there.”  And then I realized it’s hot up there every week, but the choir doesn’t act that way every week…

  • tinwoman

But, Bag, when you equate food stamp issues with black issues, you are basically saying that the members of the choir are surly about Santorum’s presence because they are black, and therefore on food stamps—you’re basically doing what conservatives do.  Please stop it.

I would say that you’re missing the allusion. The GOP candidates have been race baiting for weeks now, especially in the nationally-televised debates, using the term “food stamps” as a (not so) coded reference in the ugliest and most shameful way. (What else would elicit the show of disrespect as pointed out in the other comment?) It’s not that different than the way Jews reacted to “Hymie Town.” These safety-net shredding white guys might as well be using the term “welfare queen.” Either way, whenever I hear it it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

And this is supposed to the standard bearer for the Religious Right?  Even after he got endorsement from Dobson et al, he moved nary a whisker in the polls.  I really doubt either Mitt or Newt would need/want him as a VP.  I think it shows just how unimportant religion has become in this election.  Comments?

Lord please bring forth the rapture so this pasty white man can STOP TALKING!!!!

It’s a great photo and moment he captured. But, really? Are *all* the candidates fighting about food stamps?
Honestly, I’m tired of hearing constantly regurgitated statements about the “Conservatives” and “Republican debates”, almost *all* of which have one glaring omission: they totally leave out the message of Ron Paul! This guy isn’t quibbling over food stamps, he’s talking about the Constition and how its been trampled on almost beyond recognition by *both* parties.

WC Fields said never work with kids or animals because you’re going to get upstaged.

My opinion about black church goers just went down a few notches. Couldnt they be respectful even if they didn’t agree? Shame.

Why should they be when you aren’t?
