Drowning or Just Listing?: What Depression Looks Like

Why it’s powerful….

This picture is part of the photo-story on the CNN Photo Blog, “A ‘Visual Diary’ of Depression,” by photojournalist Marvi Lacar. What’s powerful is how the hand dangling out of the bathtub immediately conjures up suicide. What I wonder, though, is if the photo is going for too much drama when depression is actually more painful (and painful to look at) for being cripplingly monotonous and everyday.

Overall, congrats to Marvi and CNN for tackling the subject. Check out the full edit below.

    It’s a beautiful photo.

Unfortunately, after Whitney, a bathtub and a beautiful black woman’s hand sends chills down my spine.

I have depression that came out of nowhere and stayed for 13 years.  Nobody died, I experienced no single event that triggered it.  I took my depression to a war zone and lived there.  I was assaulted, a neighbor was burned to death.  The depression lifted enough that I could cope with these crises.  Then it returned. You’re right.  It’s day after day after day of utterly grinding monotony. These are beautiful pictures, but they don’t speak to my experience at all.  Perhaps the message there is that we all are ultimately alone with it. (Don’t get me started on how there’s no ‘ribbon campaign’ for mental illness…)
