An Extra Point on New Yorker Obama Campaign ‘12 Super Bowl Cover

NewImage

Yeah, I know you think the message is Obama getting off on the spectacle of Romney and Newt going at each other. But the real take away here is: Look how “Every Guy” the president is. Big screen TV, beer, football in hand, chips. Not weekend clothes, of course, he’s still working for you with his papers at his side and his tie loosened. What it does demonstrate, though, is how wildly successful the White House has been in validating Obama as an all-American guy (especially 1, 2) — and along the way, bringing illustrator Barry Blitt in line. It’s at least a hundred yards and three Vince Lombardi trophies away from this:

Obama’s chair appears to be a swivel chair, which is far more working class than the magnificent one he actually sits in.  The illustrator managed to give Obama rosy cheeks, which is quite a trick, actually.

As Romney and Gingrich scramble for a fumble, Obama sits there smiling with the football on his lap.  Of course it’s not the football, but the suggestion is that they have to scramble for something Obama’s not going to give up.

I don’t know what to make of the green color of the bottle, which any beer drinker would promptly recognize as Heineken, a foreign beer.  Is this a sly way of bringing up the birth certificate issue again?  Maybe that explains Obama’s broad grin.

Well Dennis…Rolling Rock and Yeungling are American beers in green bottles. I think you are probably a Republican craving a import beer.

Romney and Gingrich neither hold elected office right now, and probably because when they did previously they sucked at it and fumbled the ball all the way to what should have been the end of their political careers. They are running because the Republicans have nobody to put up against Obama.

I bet the chair in the oval office is a swivel chair, because he would need to have that if he is working in there. Unlike his predecessor who got the job as birthright and supreme court decision.

The President  was born in Hawaii. Accept it and move on.

Love the relaxed look as those 2 wannabes fumble everything. And that there is a Rolling Rock. Nothing more American than old 33.

You’ll note the two players tackling each other are wearing uniforms for the same team.

Good catch. I didn’t notice till after it posted. Very clever.

    Made me laugh.

The two drawings are also 3 and a half years apart. A lot has happened since then.

I don’t see them as being so different—both are organizes around the question of ‘how like us is the president?’.  The big point I think about the recent cover is that Obama is ‘in possession’…the target is the Republican candidates.  The earlier cover of the little madrassa boy and his mau-mau woman is asserting the same concept—he’s just like us—only taking the piss re public perception and its manipulations—including the sly glance from the president himself.

They are running because the Republican party has sold its soul to the filthy rich (emphasis on filthy) John-Birch-Society founders and their supporters, the endlessly ignorant and repugnant tea partiers.
