Next Up: The White House Christmas Card

As we segue from the Romney’s summery Christmas to the WH first family holiday portrait, I’m interested in your thoughts on the White House Christmas card.  As a little set up, this copy comes from ibdtimes:

Though family dog Bo is missing from the Obama family portrait, the White House Christmas card, following tradition by having the First Family absent, features him prominently. Replicas of Bo, meanwhile, are said to be sprinkled throughout nearly every room in the Oval Office for Christmas 2011, from life-sized models in felt to marzipan miniatures of the First Pooch.

Do you feel, like I do, it’s distinguished by how benign it is?

I like it. Christmas cards should be benign. I don’t know what your question is with respect to the chairs. Don’t people often have chairs to pull up to the fireplace? Especially in older homes, which the White House certainly is?

I like it, too. It’s a pretty, warm scene and the first dog gives it a personal touch.

Yuck! It’s practically a Thomas Kincade Christmas card.

It does, however, have all the Christmasy elements that the Romney card doesn’t. The warm fire, the cute puppy, the gifts and wreaths etc. But boy is it tacky. Maybe that’s another way of saying it’s benign.

The whole thing is covered in a pinkish purple glow. The “red” ribbons look more purple than red. This, together with the purple dominate portrait. No doubt political consultants were used to dress the first family, and Obama will be trying to paint himself as the centrist purple president, but maybe it’s reading too much into this image. Sometimes a tacky purple haze is just a tacky purple haze.

      Purple?

This image radiates warmth, quiet, security, comfort, safety. The dominant reds and golds give us an absolutely blue-less composition, a sad-free zone. And a snoozing watch dog means all quiet tonight.

I don’t much care for it – a little cluttered and conventional. But thank you for including the link to the 2008 Bush card – I had forgotten that cold and lonely view. This is inward looking and warm and cozy. Plus I love dogs – putting Bo in it warms it up nicely.

It’s tacky and insipid just like all “holiday” cards. “Hey who ate the Marzipan Bo?” “Michelle, I’m looking at you….”
