Dark Side of the Newt

Of course, all the buzz and smoke around the rising Newt was focused yesterday on his silly pilgrimage to The Donald. (Here are all 26 shots at Zimbio) The most worthy pics of the event, interjecting some subtle parody into the mix, come from Getty’s Spencer Platt, including this one where Trump (he wishes!) is more aligned with the microphone, and this one panning out to appropriately minimize this shallow spectacle.

More informative, however, was Newt’s Town Hall on Saturday in Staten Island shot by Getty’s Michael Nagle. Of course, the photo above (along with this variant) is the keeper. It reveals the dark, maniacal and deviousness side of Newt he’s managed to mostly keep in check this past week with all the intoxicating-as-crack attention he’s received.

As more of a Russian Roulette game than a presidential campaign, though — Gingrich on his second set of staff after Callista drove off the first bunch — things were not exactly roses in Newt-land on Saturday. If you click through the slideshow, you’ll see that several people (at least one is identified as Occupy) tried to take matters into their own hands. So at least in this case, there was actually something comprehensible to hang the death stare on.

Isn’t it time to call the Mercy Rule on the GOP?  Must we go through a year of horror as we watch Mitt Mothra and Newt Godzilla jump around in rubber suits?

    Questions to ask Newt:

“The existence of the Tea Party seems to show that your Contract With America failed. What did you do, personally, that lead to this failure? What mistakes did you make as Speaker of the House in the ’90s that you wouldn’t repeat as President?”

“At what point should the blind ambition of a politician be enough to disqualify them from running for office?”

Most politicians exhibit a certain amount of grandiosity – I suspect it’s a necessary element to withstand the rigors of running for and holding national office. But Newt is simply pathological – a narcissist of the first order, all bright shining ego, utterly lacking in humility and empathy and insight. He is a fine example of why so many people loathe politics and politicians.

That picture reminds me of an old Father Guido Sarducci sketch about record albums by various popes — if I remember right, Pius XII’s was called “Here’s Looking Down on You” … ok it was “Here’s Looking Down at You”

Oh, I am just feeling so sure that the new woman in his life is managing this comeback, molding him, quieting him for the campaign trail. Stroking him into form. A closer look at Calista may reveal a new Madam Mao emerging. Has she dance or theater in her background? Be warned.

Madam Mao was, btw, the Chairman’s fourth wife. Uh huh.
