Occupy: End of the Camping Trip?

NewImage

If this weekend photo from Portland proved prescient, what with police clearing out Oakland yesterday and New York last night, the question it raises for this scruffy, grassroots, patriotic movement is: is this the beginning of the end, or simply the end of the beginning?

(photo: Natalie Behring/Getty Images caption: An American flag has an ironic “closed” sign, as seen in Occupy Portland November 13, 2011 in Portland, Oregon. In spite of an eviction notice for early Sunday morning, Portland police delayed closing two downtown parks early today as thousands of people converged to support the Occupy Portland movement.)

Let’s not proclaim the death of OWS quite yet.  I’ll be at the OWS mathematics teach-in tomorrow:

The “mic check” is the most brilliant protest tactic since the invention of the handbill.  I’m hoping to see a lot of art and music and activism in the year to come.

You’re right about “mic check.” There’s going to be hip-hop albums, punk rock albums, MFA performance and video pieces, all called “The People’s Mic.” I’d like to keep track of them all as they come out. It’s a wonderful medium, seeming to turn anything into poetry.

Gods, what a waste of taxpayer money. They’re too cowardly to occupy the real places that need occupied–the actual boardrooms and office suites of the corporations they claim to be against. So instead, they occupy and inconvenience and outright hurt the nice people in their own communities, or the communities where they indulge their political tourism.

Pathetic. They are destroying progressivism and turning it into a consumer meme.
