The Picture from Iowa, 2012: Comic Relief –Team Newt Laying Eagle Eggs

This is the fifth post in our series, The Picture from Iowa, 2012 based on photos and on-the-ground conversations with photographer Brendan Hoffman leading up to the Ames Straw Poll, combined with analysis by The Bag.

With all the bad stuff in the air right down, we thought you could use a more featherweight look at the Iowa scramble as we count down to Saturday’s Ames Straw Poll. The Gingrich couple having descended into self-parody, notice how Callista, the “alpha bird” in the relationship, looks a lot less like a Newt clone now than she does the Team United mascot — just a weird coincidence, or a graphic designer’s revenge? — and (in her dreams) America’s national good luck charm.

‘Nuff said.

About the Photographer

Brendan Hoffman

Brendan Hoffman (b. Albany, NY, 1980) is a photographer based in Washington, DC. He began his career in 2007 after working at a desk for several years in the non-profit sector. He divides his time between client and personal work. Assignments often involve covering news and politics for publications such as TIME magazine or the New York Times. His personal projects reflect his interest in the ways in which economic and political structures shape modern society. His ongoing project “Stand the Middle Ground” is an exploration of contemporary middle class America in the context of free trade and the decline of manufacturing in a small Iowa town. Brendan has received awards for his photography from Pictures of the Year International, the White House News Photographers Association, and other organizations. He has worked in a variety of countries for both editorial and NGO clients, and is a co-founder of Prime. See more of Brendan's work for BagNews here.

She totally looks like a mannequin in that photo.

Once you point it out it is hard not to see the raptor in Mrs Gingrich’s “alpha bird” scan of the horizon. If that eagle ever gets tired of posing for right-wing propaganda, they could do worse than the former speaker’s wife. ‘Course, “raptor” has a dinosaur context to it too, as does Mr Gingrich.

I thought her scan is more rapture like, similar to Bachman’s.

And Newt, well he can’t quite crook his neck proper to overcome the steely eyes over his shoulder that wonder why he is here at all.

Newt looks like the abashed subordinate here.  Callista looks like the power in this power couple now.

Is anyone else hearing an eagle scream?
