Obama Signs Budget Bill; White House a Lonely Place

…Or, maybe I should I have titled this: Obama Finally Does Eat His Peas.

Working through the White House Debt and Deficit Negotiations Flickr set, here’s what we find last, and yes, least (#20 out of 20). It’s bad enough Obama had to sign that dog all by his lonesome (save for Souza, not necessarily to record it for posterity but to pretend they were proud of getting any deal done), but the the indignity of having to stoop through the ritual (here’s one pen for Boehner … another one for Cantor … another one for McConnell) 22 times?!

(No surprise, by the way, that Obama winds up commemorating alone when the odyssey — #1 in the Flickr set — kicks off with this. And for real contrast,  – morally as well as tonally – check out the last WH Flickr shot before the grim Deficit series begins.)

So much for the frequent use of “balanced” in the flickr captions! If Obama persists in seeking “common ground” in the coming negotiations, yet continues to ditch “balance,” there may be more lonely signings.

Am amazed at the size of Chief of Staff Bill Daley’s office. Must add to the power of whoever holds the position.

The House speaker, by President Obama’s own account, in the Sunday negotiating session at the White House, a possible sign of Boehner stepping back from the fray.

P073011PS-0508with Nancy Pelosi and Biden, the body language looks like she is about to collapse from grief.  Like a child’s funeral

  • marc sobel

P072111PS-0778looks like Pelosi is the person in the room trying to bring up reality and Obama rejecting it as simplistic

The body language of Boehner and Obama is all I need here. Note the pointing.

If Obama had even a little flair he would have signed this with a bic pen and then thrown it in the trash. That picture would have made a statement… this looks more like obedience and gruntwork with NO payoff.

Going through those pictures, I am struck by two things:

1 – Obama is actually working. You may want to puke on his offerings, but he is WORKING. This isn’t a president who clears brush on a faux ranch. And,

2 – Pete Souza must be really good at getting people to forget he is in the room. The pictures have a vitality to them that make me feel like I am present. Either that, or he can stage a scene and get everyone to hold a pose in a way that makes it LOOK authentic. However, I don’t think even seasoned politicians like Biden, Pelosi, or Boehner can act that well.

Well, my first impression is, this guy does have a propensity for putting his big feet up on fine furniture. That is not his…by the way.

Second…I would not give a rats ass for any of them.  They all deserve each other. The nation deserves better. We ain’t a gonna get it.

We’re screwed.  Oh, and the fact he is working, actually working, cuts no ice with me. In my opinion he is working against me.

Given the nature of the process and the product, the standard disclaimer on these photos suddenly seems… more relevant:

“The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in …
promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the
President, the First Family, or the White House.”
