9/11: One Day, Ten Years

9 11 NY Mag 10 years

Since we’re about to get 9/11 inundated, I thought we should wade in….

What I like about the New York Mag anniversary cover is the message how little, ten years later, we’re that much over, above or beyond it. I never would have imagined, but I fully agree.

This is also a nice, if inferential rebuttal, by the way, to all the magazine and newspaper covers proclaiming how bin Laden “lost” when he was killed a few months back. If he really “lost,”though, wouldn’t the smoke have cleared out by now?

The destruction of the entire decade, is what it says to me.

With one blow. On one day. An entire decade (and who knows how many more) have been lost.

OBL lost? I’ve not heard a non-jingoistic assessment of OBL’s goals. Scoring the match without defining the game is a waste of time.

The bottom of the picture could be a puffy cumulus cloud, portent maybe of a spot of rain, maybe just a bit of shade on a sunny day. The darkness at the top is unnatural, man made, and evil. Beware.

Your comment makes me wonder now how much the shading and type of clouds make them natural or calamitous, and exactly how you read this, whether vertically, or dimensionally, foreground to background, or vice-versa.

Let’s see… He wanted to degrade our nation’s image, reputation and moral standing in the world- point to Osama! We have embraced and befriended torture, mercs and “preventative” war with overwhelming US public approval- to the utter dismay and disbelief of the rest of the Western World. He wanted to embarrass us militarily. We are now currently stuck in two quagmires with one foot in Iraq, two still in Afghanistan. Anyone want to claim “victory” in either? Point, Osama- big time! He wanted to level us economically… over two hundred million dollars daily in Iraq And Afghanistan- which somehow, someway is never, ever mentioned, discussed or tallied into our current state of financial debt and morbidity. Point, point, and point- Osama!

Then we willingly granted him the exalted stature of martyrdom that forever enshrines him in the heart and inspiration of every fundamentalist whacko that’ll forever rise from the desert sands of the Middle East. How did he “lose” again?

And we now endure all sorts of invasions of privacy in the name of security, from porno x-ray machines to passports with radio tags to upcoming crap directed at bus and train riders.  It’s no longer guns versus butter — it’s Security versus everything else we might want to do with our funds and energy, all against the low-tech power that can be weilded by a single crazy person with a box cutter or cell phone…

      not a victory here!

Interesting cover. It’s a cloud. It’s obscured. You can’t see anything, can’t distinguish anything concrete.

    fog of war. aka lies.

  • LanceThruster

All the anniversary does is remind me just how thoroughly we’ve been lied to and how horribly complicit the media is in all this.

I am truly disgusted and disheartened beyond words (the product of a ten year festering wound).

Anyone who has lived with a champion grudge-nurser would recognize a cloud that will never disperse.  We’re still watching and listening to Dick Cheney, aren’t we?

At the bottom of the page the coloring of the cloud could be caused by
natural light but the clouds at the top definitely carry blackened
particles, a dirty something that is not supposed to be there. It is a
different black than the deep shadow of thunder clouds and a sign that
    something is wrong.

    Not smoke; pyroclastic cement  . . .

  • LanceThruster

I would add the fact that photos of Ground Zero by the public were expressly forbidden out of “respect” for the victims (backed by the full weight of the law – itself one of the first thunderclaps of the gathering storm set to blow away our Constitutional rights as the maelstrom intensified).

I have no words for my loathing of these hypocrites that couldn’t be bothered to conduct a proper crime scene investigation (knowing that the actual truth of the event might be a bit…problematic).

I’m responding to color. Nature’s cumulus are white in normal light, dark areas the result of shadow. Sunset can add color as a function of light — the cloud is white, shading and color are a function of natural light.

The billows from the tower carry their own coloring agents, airborne dust particles that were solid material moments earlier. At the bottom of the page the coloring of the cloud could be caused by natural light but the clouds at the top definitely carry blackened particles, a dirty something that is not supposed to be there. It is a different black than the deep shadow of thunder clouds and a sign that something is wrong.
