Oslo Massacre: What’s in a Headshot?

1. That’s funny, he doesn’t look Muslim! (even though that’s who the attack was first attributed to).

2. Stan Banos writes:

The new blonde haired, blue-eyed face of terrorism? That model head shot is definitely one of the photos of the year…

From Empress of the Global Universe:

In the photographs now circulating around the world, Anders Behring Breivik looks almost preppy. Neatly parted blond hair frames a boyishly handsome face. The upturned collar of a peach-colored polo shirt pokes through a dark Izod sweater.

It’s hard to reconcile the softly smiling young man in these professional studio shots with the monster that witnesses say donned a police uniform and ruthlessly hunted down scores of young Norwegians, even firing at those who jumped into freezing water in a desperate bid to escape his rampage.

I’m reading a lot of references to “preppy.” I haven’t yet seen any reference to “Aryan,” though.

From The Star:

The portrait of the blond haired, blue-eyed Breivik, the collar of his salmon-hued polo shirt poking straight out of his black Lacoste sweater, seemed to stare out from newspapers and television screens everywhere here.

Seems to be some debate as to whether the polo shirt was “peach” or “salmon.” Somehow though, I don’t remember any wardrobe (or foliage) descriptions in early found photos of the “underwear bomber” — not until pics turned up with a prayer cap, that is. (And then, Mr. Abdulmutallab was boyishly handsome, too.)

3. I’m seeing a lot of sentences like this one (bold mine) from the Daily Mail:

Six foot tall and blond, Breivik is reported to have arrived on the island of Utoya dressed as a policeman and opened fire after beckoning several young people over in his native Norwegian tongue.

I’m actually not clear exactly why the height and hair color is so notable here. Is the point that a short, dark-haired (and/or dark-skinned) “cop” wouldn’t have been as easily trusted beckoning young people over in Norwegian? Or, is there a need to punctuate how unbelievable it is that a guy with those features would commit such an act. (If Facebook had existed in ‘95, I wonder if Tim McVeigh’s page would have been good, at least, for a shot from the senior prom.)

4. Breivik apparently likes uniforms. Here he is in full Masonic regalia:

UPDATE: 7/24/11, 8:30 PST

Apparently, Breivik has an intense interest in uniforms.

The video posted before the killer’s slaughter gives more evidence of Breivik’s passion. (The triptych above was compiled by the NYT based on screen shots from the video.) He was also particularly fascinated with the Crusader uniform. Starting from about the 11:50 mark, near the end of the video, we see several Crusader shots that segue into stills of the Mason uniform above, then the uniform with the decorations, then the scuba/Seal shot.

This frame, which appears immediately after “Scuba Breivik” actually has a strong, if steely resonance with “Hazmat Breivik.”  Like alter-egos from his video game world, all these martial, commando and warrior costumes (and the headshots, too?) reflect someone hurting, and, looking back, apparently seething for identity.

UPDATE 2,  3: 9:15 am

Sadly, the the unfolding evidence of Brievik’s Christian radicalism, Muslim-hate and paranoia over immigration could not prevent the media from drawing a parallel to Muslim extremists.  Although the analogy to be drawn here — sketched by Brievik himself — is to the Crusaders, the following paragraph appeared in the NYT background piece Sunday morning referring to Breivik’s video/manifesto:

Thomas Hegghammer, a terrorism specialist at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment, said the manifesto bears an eerie resemblance to those of Osama bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders, though from a Christian rather than a Muslim point of view. Like Mr. Breivik’s manuscript, the major Qaeda declarations have detailed accounts of the Crusades, a pronounced sense of historical grievance and calls for apocalyptic warfare to defeat the religious and cultural enemy.

“It seems to be an attempt to mirror Al Qaeda, exactly in reverse,” Mr. Hegghammer said.

What the quick description of Hegghammer doesn’t clarify, which his website does at the get-go, is that “Thomas Hegghammer is an academic specialising in the study of violent Islamism.”

Really? Was it Mr. Breivik attempting to mirror Al Qaeda in reverse, or was it Mr. Hegghammer, among others, attempting that?

Update 3 (7/26): “Bad Things Happen. Muslims Involved.” Colbert nails it.

That last pic is of him in Masonic regalia.  The apron looking thing is actually called an apron…don’t know enough to tell what his rank is.

So, this guy is a Mason, an organic farmer, a neo-Nazi Christian and a gamer.  Read about that last at the Gawker family forum on games:  http://kotaku.com/5824147/oslo-terrorist-anders-behring-breivik-used-modern-warfare-2-as-training+simulation-world-of-warcraft-as-cover

    Lots to ponder here.

blonde haired, blue eyed terrorwas called nazi
    seems so today

Under Nazi occupation, trafficking in black market eggs and butter was terrorism. To be accused of terrorism was to be convicted.

His rank is that of the Worshipful Master, who is fully in charge of his lodge.  What has happened is completely polar opposite to the beliefs of Freemasons.

    • psychophistorian

I wonder how many Muslim Freemasons there are?

Gonna have to recalibrate all those terrorist detection units we’ve put into service over the last decade. Happy economic days are here again!

    • Teresa

yeah, because twice or so a decade there is some blond blue eyed white terrorist who blows something up or shoots people.  Let us re-calibrate for the unusual in the name of political correctness.

Handsome/beautiful people are perceived as more intelligent and trustworthy than other people, according to psychologists.  So yes, his appearance makes a difference.  The young people approached him thinking he was a typical Norwegian policeman.  Frankly, I would walk up to him too.  Whereas we are all familiar with the trope of the beautiful but “airheaded” woman (blonde bimbo trophy wife, etc.), almost nobody treats a man who looks like this with anything but deference and respect.

    • Marie

Yes. We don’t think that someone that pretty could be evil.

  • Asta

I don’t understand why the photos of him have no backgrounds, are these images photoshopped?

My first impression, which continues to persist, is that Breivik has the waxy, too-perfect coldness of CGI modeling.  (shudder)

    • http://www.bagnewsnotes.com Michael Shaw

Yes, I believe he photoshopped them himself.  (By the way, nice to see you here.)

As usual, I read the comments of others before posting my own. (Hard to maintain rational discourse when you talk but don’t listen, right?)Soon as I got to the bottom of the page, I saw side-by-side the post of the 22nd (the before and after faces of the American just back from Afghanistan) and this one. Serendipitously, both posts deal with reading the faces of young men, one of whom killed and the other of whom killed and/or felt complicit in killing — as agent or potential victim.

Incidentally, one of the remarks in the post identified the sweater as “IZOD” and the other as “Lacoste.” I looked it up and found that the relationship between the two brands has been complicated. In any event, I wondered whether someone in the know can identify the brand of the sweater just by seeing the little bit? Or whether the association was made because back when talk about “preppiness” was popular, both brands were associated with the concept.

Freemasonary is NOT a religious or political organisation. So I don’t see how him being a Freemason has any relevance to the actions he took last week. His actions have been the opposite of what Freemasonary stands for, there is no place for violence or hatred in masonary. Rest assured that there are Freemasons the world over (including myself) who are disgusted by the actions of this INDIVIDUAL.

In Norway mainline Masonic lodges practice “The Swedish Rite of Freemasony”.  All members must swear to be Christians.  This would be like a few of the concordant bodies in North America; like some of the final degrees of the York Rite.  So in this Norway venue, religion is unfortunately connected…. But I seriously doubt that this guy was Master of a lodge (as his apron might suggest).

He’s sort of the Ken Doll of Horror. Nice. And in the first public shot of “EVIL Ken Doll” I was wondering about the weird little hair stuff on his chin but I guess when he lost some more of his head hair and put on the waiter outfit, he shaved that stuff off. It looked kinda like he dribbled some food down his face. I wonder if he tried on the wedding dress for pictures, too.

In the last 20 years the majority of terrorism has been claimed by Muslim extremist….. so
obviously, they would be the first speculative choice, doesn’t take
clinical psychologist to figure that out! If the majority of terrorism had been claimed by little old lady’s, they would have been the first speculative choice!

Artists and performers routinely use head shots that are 15 years old to assuage their vanity and we go along with the conceit.  Why do we do the same for a mass murderer?  No Black, Latino or Muslim criminal would be given the same break.

  • LanceThruster

When I first saw his pic, I thought of the kid in the song “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” from the movie version of “Caberet.”

Thanks for this link. Two weeks ago, I was at lunch with a group including a woman who had just returned from a vacation in her native Sweden. She explained the social support given to Muslims in Sweden. They are provided health care, and if they don’t have transportation, that is provided also.

Members of her extended family there include her brother, who is a doctor. He takes week-long assignments going to rural areas where no permanent healthcare is available. The upshot was that a lot of assistance is provided to these immigrants.

The perpetrator may have wanted to attack Muslims in his country, but chose more easily found government targets and campers as surrogates.

We could certainly stand to recalibrate what we call “terrorism.” When a bunch of light skinned people in what once was the world’s richest country (funny how the trillions spent on two useless wars never get mentioned in our present economy) decide to invade a country for no good reason and kill thousands of innocent men, women and children- somehow, the word never gets used.

And, of course, I’ll leave the fact that the vast majority of serial killers are white for another discussion.

If only that were true, but it is not. It’s just that it is not Politically Correct to call white male terrorist, well terrorist. Instead they are called insane and disconnected.

When you get into his manifesto, it is revealed that he had a multi-year plan for revolution against what he saw as the existential threat of Islam to Western European culture.  And by multi-year, his target date was around 2083.  So, he targeted the young of the political party he saw as his opponent/enemy.  Wiping them out, was ‘necessary’ to his long-range plan to save his culture.  It really is chilling and I fear that the spark ignited will find ready fuel on our own shores.

And the final, chilling, sadistic note:  he dressed as a policeman, set the bomb in Oslo, came to the camp to ‘reassure’ them, and then started shooting.  As he walked from place to place, he would find a group of frightened young folk, reassure them he was the police, come out, I am here to help you, and when they trusted him and did so, mowed them down.

Truly, as the scientists have recently been able to ascertain, the conservative brain is different from the liberal.  Physiologically and functionally.

What are we to do, to maintain a civil society?

  • Glenn

The youth camp he shot up was one attended by the children of the ruling party politicians, or young political protegees of the party. He was killing future Labor Party leaders – and also inflicting pain and grief on their parents.

When he came to the island masquerading as a policeman, one of the reasons  he gained their trust was because they were concerned about their family members being injured in the bomb that hit their workplace.

It strikes me as a particularly cruel, though horribly smart plan. The victims must have died in such fear – thinking their government had been overrun, their parents killed, and the police targeting them. The news says it took a long time for the true police to respond, but I imagine the victims would have been reluctant to summon them – why call the cops if you think the cops are killing you?

  • BooksAlive

A rescuer who lived nearby used his boat to remove children from the island but it could hold only 14. He made several trips, and the last was to pick up four who waited on shore for him to return. He said he’d been asked if he was a policeman, and when he said  “No,” the young girl burst into tears of relief.

I read this morning that 600 people were on the island, but many were in a building listening to news of the bombing.

I had asked my friend if the Muslims she saw in Sweden had come to work, and she said no. She said that with no border barriers in the European Union, people are free to move into other countries.

“What are we to do, to maintain a civil society?”

Perhaps the Left’s enthusiasm for terrorists of congenial political dispositions has had unforeseen side effects.  When an unhinged loon like this sees the solicitous regard in which so-called “progressives” have long held the likes of Sacco and Vanzetti, the Black Panthers, the IRA, Hamas, and the ELF, is it any wonder he has decided that sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander?  He will certainly not be the last to act on this perception.

How many people knew about Pam Geller and Bat Ye’or a week ago?  How many know about them now?  How many people will read Breivik’s rather well-written manifesto in the next few weeks and say, “You know, this guy was a nutter, but he makes some damn good points.” ??

I wonder if that famous left-wing terrorist and Obama pal, Bill Ayers, has an opinion about chickens coming home to roost.
