Brand Watch: POTUS Edition

The big winner of the White House Twitter Townhall? Well, where do I get my own White House-edition MacBook?

Show me another President, by the way, who has been better at identifying himself with trends and brands than 44.

The face and hand gestures are interesting simply because it’s rare to see a smile or happy body language these days.  What is he so smitten by?  Is it Twitter itself?  His new MacBook Pro? A particular tweet? I’d expect that face if his policies had just brought world peace or the birth of the information age or something.  More likely is that he’s been thrown a softball tweet that just happens to lead into a campaign talking point.

Thank goodness Apple computers are “designed in California” – even though they are famously made by exploited labor in Asia.. considering his speech included a bit about the importance of being on the leading edge of the next new technology AND producing the resultant products in the USA.  Might as well just paste a big eagle sticker over that issue.

I have not follow up on the twitt-discussion, so I can’t comment on the substance of what happened. But – did he have to stand up the whole time while using the computer?

I didn’t watch. I’m mostly following the newswire photos. I believe he was sitting down for a good part of it though in front of a screen displaying tweets.

Given his facial expression and gesture, I’d say Obama is throwing a “semi-full penguin” here. Let me explain.

About two decades back, my wife, daughter, and I were vacationing in Rome at Christmas time. My wife is petite, and was bundled in her overcoat almost like Randy in Christmas Story. My daughter and I took turns being pains in the ass, and when one of us had exasperated my wife she would throw one or both of her arms up in the air. If it was one arm, we called it a half-penguin and knew we’d better back off. If it was both arms, we called it a full penguin and knew we’d gone too far.
