What’s To See in the John Edwards Mug Shot

AP/U.S. Marshals Servi

It’s not the shame-avoidant salesman’s smile that’s significant; we’ve seen that a million times. It’s the tensed jaw and cheekbone in the profile pic that contradicts the front view and gives away the anger and humiliation. It’s not as extreme as what we saw from Wiener last week, but related.

Reminds me of Tom Delay’s mugshot. I think he’s stretching the neck in the profile view so as not to show his waddle. Par for the edwards course.

You can get a stretching of the neck not to show the waddle, though, without the jaw and cheek tension.  In this case, it isn’t about vanity.

Why can’t they ever get the aspect ratio correct on these things?

It’s like when you go to a motel and you’d love to watch HBO, but someone has forced the TV into sideways-stretchy mode so that it’s ‘wide screen’ rather than ‘the show that’s on.’

Anyway. Vaguely interesting that he’s not smiling from the left.

fortunately, i’ve never had a mug shot taken, so i don’t know how they’re done in real life. but in the movies and on television, they are always two separate shots taken from a fixed point of view with the subject doing the turning. the difference between the two moments is striking – as if we can see right into his thoughts.

i’m piggybacking a bit on what you wrote, michael: it seems to me that the head-on smile is the self-assurance of a man who’s been able to talk his way out of any situation when given the chance.

the profile pic on the right shows not only guilt and humiliation, but also a bit of disarmament. in that moment, he has been rid of the power of persuasion afforded him – for nearly his whole life – by his good looks and good boy drawl. he’s just a man arrested, following the orders of some uniformed official.

on a side and snarky note: remember his two americas theme?

Yeah, I remember that theme and it’s loss is what I mourn. Where is the champion for the “little guy” now?

Matt: I agree. Of course, I’m focusing more on those factors at a more
      purely somatic level.
