Newt, Glitter and the Gotcha Media

I never thought I’d be feeling sorry for Newt. (I guess calling out both sides for extremism, especially your own, is grounds for political extermination carried out by the Seal Team 6-like media).

What is truly painful to witness, however — and that’s before the pathetic closing frames of Mr. and Mrs. Gingrich acting like business-as-usual after being “glittered” by some wacko in Iowa– is the papparazzi-like intentions of this AP video 1/2 documenting a book signing while 1/2 looking to visually indict the couple (by way of awkward close-ups) for sporting bling from Tiffany’s.

Sure, I think NewtCallista (or is it CallistaNewt, the way the video demonstrates who’s wearing the pants) are a couple of hypocrites for assuming to be populists or modest people. The way the media operates like piranha these days, however, going for the jugular like there’s no difference between AP and TMZ — well, that’s even uglier.

If Newt really does hang himself (and who’s to say the dust he’s kicking up isn’t actually good for democracy, either in fostering a discussion challenging sacred orthodoxy, or for exposing the right-wing’s radical doctrine?), why would we wan’t the media to supply the rope?

This is my favorite screen shot of the bunch, though.  Hmm, how much will she get for that one?

Maybe the real discussion we should be having here, especially after a member of Congress was attacked and maimed in Tucson this year, is not just how to elevate the discussion and encourage a more constructive atmosphere in Washington and in the media, but, bottom-line, how to physically protect our Presidential candidates.

AP video here.

Sorry, but that face, just creeps me out. As for the glitter, much ado about nothing.

disagree with Ralfast - Callista’s face in picture one is one of the first pictures I’ve seen of her where she has a human expression.
That said, I found the glittering of the Gingriches hilarious. I loved the aftermath – She went on with business as usual, while Newt pushed the glitter around the table till some sycophant rushed up to him and tried to brush his suit off.

I’m not sure you’re being quite fair to the media. They were there to document the signing, right? Why not. If something unexpected happens during the signing, what are they supposed to do, turn off the camera? Destroy the footage?

I thought the young woman with the camera was part of the glittering-group – wasn’t she?

Well the second still does humanize her a bit, since it lacks that hawk like stare of hers.

In addition to spending thousands on all that Tiffany bling, maybe a nose job is in order.

    Her’s is a little ”beaky”.

The AP shouldn’t have been trying to indict the Happy Gingrich Family for wearing bling. They should have been trying to indict them for being guests of honor for a group who suggest that being gay causes suicide, among other things. But hate like that is all so hum-drum these days… Sure MN Family Council has the right to hate their own sons and daughters for whatever reason, but here we have a major Republican Presidential contender signing his book amongst them.

Gingrich is an extremist. But since he has all that expensive bling, media, including BagNews, think of him as ‘classy.’ That’s why he and Callista wear that stuff: It conveys legitimacy, even when it’s being criticized. All that glitters….
