Race-y Pictures

With the ongoing budget skirmishes bringing the Tea Party into the limelight again, I was interested in this photo from a rally last Thursday in San Francisco. I’m wondering if this guy was that bad at laying out the sign, or if he didn’t actually telegraph one of the primary underlying fears/motivators behind the movement, and who exactly he thought were the main beneficiaries of the bureauc-racy.

Oh, that picture just kills me. Yes, he was that bad at laying out the sign, no doubt so distracted by the cleverness of writing “BUREAUCRACY” with red tape. And had someone like me stood behind him and said things like, ‘measure back from the right edge of the sign and do it in advance’, we’d have been no doubt oppressing his free speech rights.

More than that, I contrast the setting in the picture with his crappy sign. Off to the side, so graceful, is what I think is the Ferry Building, which I bet the city built and maintained for the purposes of docking ferries, another public service. Its face tells the time, which is kept by the National Institute for Standards and Technology and the United States Naval Observatory. Those graceful palms? Planted, watered and maintained by bureaucrats in the City of San Francisco. He is right. His life is drenched in bureaucracy, and it has provided the lovely things all around him.

Racy is the most legible element of his sign. Cracy (sic) is next.

Betcha he’d hate to see the Bureau of Engraving and Printing shut down.

He didn’t run out of space.. “Bureauc” sounds like “Barack”.. and the “racy” ending is just a bonus.

If so, too clever by half. Byurahcracee (which is how it is pronounced phonetically) hardly rolls off the tongue as anything remotely sounding like Barack.
