Beached White Male? Oh, Please.

1. Don’t these big news mags do this “endangered white male” thing at least once a year?

2. Given Newsweek relaunch (and continued financial straights, I assume), the pandering (or, “protecting the base”) is at least comprehensible.

3. No beach on Wall Street.

4. Sorta odd graphic showing up, as it does, on the anniversary week of the massive BP oil spill. Looks pristine.

5. The whales should sue.

6. Dying for you thoughts on the Ah-nold display

    The ‘angry white male’ thing started back in the ’90s. That was 20 years ago. It seems like the angry white males from that period would have left behind their Newt Gingrich-inspired anger and would be marching in the streets with the AARP by now.

    Really, though, the ‘angry white male’ phenomenon is not about changing demographics or even the sour economy, but about class and privilege. If that’s what Newsweek tackles, then yay. But I doubt it.

    Well unemployment is much higher for African Americans but then Newsweek only counts them as 3/5th of a White Male. He also should be fatter.

    Reminds me of those TV ads for “electrostatic” dust mops where women in dusty or muddy dresses get “picked up” by the mop pad. There’s also one where a guy dressed like dust is hanging out at the “space bar” on the computer but it doesn’t seem to be as popular.

    As for Ah-nold, he’s the fearsome android who becomes our cuddly protector. Actually, he’s a pot-smoking, womanizing, steroid-taking conman (see his story of working as a contractor where he would “loosen” the bricks in clients’ chimneys to get more work) who has used his celebrity to become a political figure and is now on his way to becoming a “statesman.”

    The suits aren’t beached. They’re feasting on weakened prey, like orcas and sharcks.

    By the way, In Europe, Ah-nolds (post -terminator) face fills this weeks cover.

    Regarding the death of the empowerment of the white male worker, what goes around has come around in this case too.

    Yes, I looked at the Forbes 500 and realized that not every single one of the richest people in America is a great white male. Then I realized that this a real crisis. Of course I don’t know what to do about the fact that the ones who are screwing the great white males out of their sinecures are other great white males. Hmmm.

    Yes, what is really funny are the two competing headlnes: Arnold’s Wild Road Trip over the Beached White Male. The indestructable white male movie star-body builder-gov and the flattened corporate “suit”.

    Interesting bit of racist and sexist comments….not all white males end up on Wall Street screwing the masses; indeed, i’m sure the majority do not. But cover implies they all do, and comments suggest the readers bit the bait…look who’s being manipulated now?

      That is obvious, so much so it need not be said. But complaining about the decline of the WASP culture is obtuse to say the least and a great way to divert attention from the real socioeconomic problems and struggles of the nation.

      So who bit what now?

      Ah, the old “silence them with appeals to fairness” move. Except that simply taking a look on my TV, at the current US Congress, at the governors of most states in this country, of pictures of CEO’s and the wealthiest Americans I notice, well — what do you know? — that damn if they aren’t nearly all white males!

      Trying to claim that the commenters here are racist and sexist is so odious that I just had to spray some air freshener.

      And PS — I’m actually in a close relationship with a non-Wall Street white male, my father was one, my grandfathers were two more, and my nephews, BIL, uncles, and many of my friends are them too. No one is claiming that all white males are responsible for every ill but they sure as hell cause a lot of them, if not most, and have for the length of recorded history. Maybe that’s why they’re now endangered?

      If it isn’t about you, why all the concern? If it doesn’t apply, no worries. By the way, the oppressor (cis-gendered, straight, white male) can’t be suffering from racism and sexism; so sorry — it just doesn’t work that way. Bit of projection perhaps?

    Again? Again with the White Man Descending thing? BTW, I first read it as “Bleached White Male”.

    The layout is really odd, but the photograph itself is rather horrid. That’s a beach?

    Some white men are suffering, sure, but not the ones the magazine is talking about.
