Diane Sawyer Watches

I don’t know. I just like this picture. The iPhone photo, posted on Diane Sawyer’s Facebook page, captures her watching a man in Sendai, Japan shoveling mud outside his business while one of her crew videos the scene. I’m just as interested in the fact an ABC person took it and put it on their photo wall.

    There’s a tension created by the entirely faceless scene. As if from a post-apocalyptic graphic novel, the leather-booted, blonde amazon contemplates the acquiescent drudgery before her. The laborer, having nothing to offer her, continues at his task, which gives him an excuse to avoid the further indignity of giving obeisance to someone who just simply isn’t going to help at all.

    When this kind of thing happened during the Kobe Earthquake in 1995 — reporters stood around looking — some people yelled at them word-to-the-effect “Don’t just stand there, do something to help us!”

    I went over to see if I could be of help, and wound up making a video to document the other, more typical responses — centered and grounded, commonly known as “gaman”. See
