Palin Does Haiti Cholera: How’s My Hair? (Or is it AP Split Ends?)

If I find the fantastically clever Sarah Palin one of the shallowest and blatantly self-serving politicians, err, political celebrities I’ve ever seen, it doesn’t stop me from taking pause upon seeing these AP shots from Franklin Graham’s cholera treatment center in Haiti.

Damn right it’s revolting seeing Sarah getting her hair made up like this field hospital is her movie set — same as it’s irksome seeing Sara and Greta Van Susteren wearing far-less-than-compassionate expressions and acting like looky-loos while being trailed by a video guy, Greta sporting a huge piece of gear herself.

And then, the multiple shots of Sarah sanitizing and washing her hands suggests the former Gov is primarily concerned, above all humanitarian else, about catching something.

There are two questions I can’t quite answer, however. 1.) Compassion notwithstanding, could these exact same images have been created if it was Biden, Bill Clinton, Hillary or Nancy Pelosi moving around this camp with media in tow over the same afternoon? 2.) How much was it the Palin team’s behavior, attitude or reputation that so encouraged these AP photographers (one or both local?) along with AP photo editors to suddenly drop the typical, everyday play-along (since we all get the difference between this vs. this) and deliver these scathing photo op-defying pictures of “the Sarah show?”

(Update: Credit is due to various commenters at HuffPo for clarifying that the “hairdresser” in the top photo is, in fact, Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol. This clarification certainly raises questions about the clarity and meaning of the AP caption below stating that Palin was “having her hair done.”  Still, the fact that Palin’s daughter was attending to Palin’s hair, as opposed to a professional stylist, only reinforces the concern I raise in the last paragraph of the post about the AP’s objectivity in focusing on these particular images.)

Why do they keep referring to her as Alaska Governor? And, what was humanitarian about the trip?

Image 2 tells the tale. What’s this story about? Well, it’s not about whoever that is in the foreground, backs to us. Follow the video cam, there’s our story. Nice of the natural light source to highlight our target, lowlight nearly everyone else.

The real question, a diagnostic question we should ask ourselves every time they shove another picture of SP into our faces: would they be showing this picture to us if the central subject were, say, Janet Reno? If not, what does the former half-term governor of Alaska bring to the table that, say, the former two-term Attorney General of the United States does not?

    • quincyscott

Wow, an SCTV reference! Spot on, too.

  • Marg

Even more shallow than I imagined. Good grief! Getting your
hair done in a field hospital.
At least she didn’t wipe her hands on Greta, the way George
    Bush did to Bill Clinton.
What a waste of space on this planet.

    • April

Do you people really read or listen to this moron! It was her DAUGHTER fixing her hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you too would have washed your hands at a Cholera camp!
Shitty reporting and the ignorant folks who take you at face value need some education!
      Idiots!
Way to go Quiet Riot!!!!!!!!! Dedicated Dad, they are so far up the “de-nile” without a paddle!!! Reaching for straws on her.

    • g

As April rudely points out, it was her daughter, not a stylist.

And despite April’s indignation, it’s interesting. Both for the choices made by the AP of what shots to take and what to publish, and for the family dynamic where a daughter fixes the mom’s hair, rather than the other way around. In this all-media family, it’s fascinating. How unlikely would it be for Chelsea Clinton to be fixing Hillary’s hair? Or Jenna Bush Laura’s? Typically, wouldn’t it be the mother, smoothing the child’s hair? Everyone in the Palin family seems to be dedicated to maintaining Sarah’s image. What does the family think is the most important thing here?

And yes, I wonder if it’s unfair of AP to publish the all grooming and hygiene pictures – you’d think many people would be practicing handwashing – unless the Palins were doing to so much as to be noticeable.

Finally – it is an amazing coincidence that just after Palin’s reality TV show depicts Kate Gosselin as a hand-sanitizing freak, the AP would depict Sarah’s handwashing. I’m no fan of Palin’s but – perhaps there is a calculation here.

Does anybody else remember the Bush White House “compassion” web pages? Where “compassion” = “George Bush has his picture taken with Negroes”.

    That was awesome.

PALIN-HATERS ARE SOME OF THE STUPIDEST AND HATEFUL PEOPLE ON EARTH.

  • Quiet Riot

You Lefties on this site with your Palin bashing just got HAD.

You are all EPIC FAIL for falling for this little trick.

Your hatred for Palin has blinded you.

    http://weaselzippers.us/2010/12/12/latest-faux-palin-controversy-she-had-a-stylist-doing-her-hair-on-trip-to-haiti/

Oh, and just a reminder: Palin was largely responsible for bringing in 604 seats to the Republican side in the elections last month. She sure is dumb, isn’t she?
Want to know what Obama did? Besides devastating the Democrat Party, he gave us Record deficits, record unemployment, record bank failures, record foreclosures, record number of people on food stamps, record death toll in Afghanistan, record spending, record trade deficit, record number of golf games played by a president, I could go on, but as far as this little scandal is concerned, maybe you people should count the number of maids-in-waiting ME-Chelle Obama takes with her when she goes on a little taxpayer-funded trip all around the world.

    • Parah Sail’in

where do you get your information. I would love it if you would put a notation after each accusation so we could fact check your statements. I’ll be waiting…. By the way, Michele Obama is the FIRST LADY.

    • WonderingWhyPeopleFollowHER

You seem a little obsessed with Sarah. She is not a political figure or she holding any official office. She is no comparison to President Obama.

Please post Ms. Palin’s accomplishments and Presidential actions taken by her to stop the depression?

    • xyz

She is not as dumb as her “followers.”

  • Parah Sail’in

why is she smiling in all these photos? This doesn’t seem like a smil’in occasion. Whould would think they needed to have their hair looked at even by Bristol when on a tragic mission such as she is supposedly on? Looks like a fun trip to me.

  • daveinboca

Wow, the d-bag left is so compassionate about Haiti all it can really summon up is more drivel and dreck about Sarah, and maybe Andy Sullivan is your consultant on her family issues?

  • daveinboca

Actually, nowadays I’d counsel Quiet Riot from now on to regard the d-bags on the left and their fascination with trying to torpedo Sarah as an EPIC FLAIL

  • http://americanandproud.net Robert

Oh yeah heaven forbid a woman worried about her hair before cameras roll, that never happens… Oh an by the way,it was bristol palin doing her hair take a good look at the photo and the after pic.. That’s okay though libers keep up your PDS for a while it’s fun to watch…

I will raise $2 million dollars for Governor Sarah Palin from my wheelchair. As a disabled veteran, I cringe at the direction this country is moving in at present. Government control of all facets of our lives and a vast dependency on welfare is not what our nation’s founders had in mind. Everyone should read the Federalist Papers and then they will realize how far off track we are at present. Not just because of the Democrats but also the mushy moderate Rockefeller Republican RINOs.

    • tinwoman

Well, whatever else you accomplished, Bag, you sure called out the trolls. I thought your commentary was actually a bit too fair to Palin. Never mind…as we can see above, any negative commentary about Palin just makes her supporters love her more.

She’ll stump for Rick Perry in 2012, and he’ll be elected. The destruction of the country will then begin in earnest.

    • tinwoman

Alan, I feel sorry for you. I believe you receive some kinds of benefits, do you not?

Why don’t you give them all up, and show us how rootin-tootin independent you can be just like in the frontier days you want us all to go back to?

      No? Why not? Please explain.

    • soxfan4life

      @tinwoman
If someone had the destruction of the USA and the dollar as an agenda, what exactly would they do differently than the Obama administration has done?

Palin is a media slut. All the cheap lazy media johns are lining up in their air conditioned SUVs in the media ghetto. I tossed her name into Google Insights (search information) she was of no interest… there was a minor uptick blip during the election… and then no interest again.. The Koch’s have way to much money to waste. The media are a bunch of lazy bastards. The numbers aren’t there!

    http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=Sarah%20Palin&cmpt=q

  • Chris

She is a joke of America.

  • ragg

I am from Haiti, and i don’t want Palin to use the country in one of her publicity stunt.

  • http://dumbolddad.blogspot.com Dedicated_Dad

Surely anyone whose daughter would help reseat an errant hairpin deserves vitriolic derision!

That she’d be so stupid as to wash her hands after visiting ground-zero in a cholera epidemic – so as to avoid spreading said epidemic – just proves her utter lack of intelligence.

Best of all, using her celebrity status and her popular “reality” show to call attention to the plight of the Hatian people – showing the ugly reality of their situation to millions of people with the capacity to help – only demonstrates her selfish, narcissistic personality.

Do you people ever actually listen to yourselves?

Your PDS is showing – and we’d all be laughing if you weren’t so obviously SICK, and the outcome of your disease the utter destruction of our Republic and our way of life.

Seriously, get some help – please!

  • Adrian

What if it turns out that Bristol was PAID to be Sarah’s stylist for the trip because it would look bad for Sarah to take her $23,000 per week stylist?

Can’t wait to see the expense report.

  • Adrian

“Todd! Get me another Haitian. This one makes me look fat.”

  • David

Look I think Palin is a hypocritical buffoon, but these photos and comments don’t even rank in the discussion.

Isn’t that normal behavior for any mother and daughter in public buffoon or otherwise? And really what question can we ask about a person who uses hand sanitizer? It’s on the door of every hospital room in the country. Heck they even have it in the line at my local bank branch.

  • Barrack Obozo

The trouble is the photo in question is Bristol fixing her mother’s hair and not what you propagandists would have others believe. But then again, it’s typical of you hypocrites who supported Edwards the whoremonger and his $400.00 haircuts. The American people are waking up to you the parasitic class. See you in 2012 when Obozo and the Senate dummycrats lose power. hahahahahahaha………

  • JisMe

no one should be surprised that a political wanna-be like Palin would use this to get media coverage.
    Typical republickin’!

  • Squeaky McCrinkle

    Palin is a media slut.

Precisely. America’s celebrity cult is unsettling at best . . . think Oprah . . . revolting at worst . . . think Paris Hilton and Palin.

The world awaits the upskirt shots.

It’s kind of just like Matt Taibbi described, isn’t it?

  • rabbit

I’m no expert, but I’m thinking that when visiting a cholera hospital that you should:

    1. Tie your hair back so it’s not flying all over this place, even if you must recruit your daughter to help do so.

    2. Wash your hands well both before and after. This is, after all, cholera.

    Inanity reaches new heights.

    • tinwoman

Rabbit, I think it’s the fact that Palin is there at all, as a publicity stunt, that is setting people off, not what she did really. She is exploiting the suffering of the Haitians for a photo op while primping and making sure she isn’t exposed to anything catching. I can see your point, but from the other perspective, she is being very annoying.

    • Dave

Actually, as a nurse, I can tell you you were almost spot on with the steps to take in a isolation setting, but you forgot one important thing….

3.) make sure ALL non-essential persons leave the area

…I really hope she catches cholera, its easily treated in 1st world settings, and the pain would serve her right for trying to make a plague a photo op…

  • http://roseonpolitics.blogspot.com roseonpolitics

She needs drop her PAC and start a company called Palin inc. She is getting tons of money making speeches, giving endorsements, etc, it is getting harder and harder to take her seriously.
