Bag’s Most Important Picture of the Year

In six years, I can’t remember doing a post without a photo, so you can imagine this really means something.  I do have a picture to paint, however.

At The Bag, we’ve been working hard to grow a team, ever-sharpen our craft, foster discussion and community, and have an impact as visual analysts and activists.  In 2010, we delivered:

A new site design (with refinements coming) / New contributors / Our tried-and-true reading of news photos 15 times a week / Fierce independent photojournalism  twice a week from the best in the business / 4 audio slideshow interviews with the best in the business /  / Salon discussions analyzing the top visual stories of the day. / A popular twitter feed with even more analysis of visual politics.

I know times are hard and it’s also Christmas time.  What I’m asking, though, is for each reader to contribute at least $20 to help underwrite our activities … ok, less if things are really tight, but more if you’ve got the means. (And If you check out Monday’s post, you’ll also see that each $20 buys you a raffle ticket for prints and photo books signed by Bag’s contributors, plus entry to our NY party on the 29th.)

If you appreciate our effort, dedication and intelligence; if this site is a worthy part of your day or your life; if you feel this “persuasion society” absolutely necessitates sharper visual consumers; if you feel pictures are way too loaded and somebody needs to defuse them; if you think our comment threads are as thoughtful as any other site on the web; if you feel independent photojournalism must survive beyond the whim of corporate media …

Thanks so much for your loyalty and your investment.

Contributions can also be made by check (although they must be received by December 28th to be eligible for the raffle). Checks should be made payable to Fractured Atlas, with “BagNews Notes” in the memo line and sent to:  BagNews - c/o Michael Shaw, Ph.D. – P.O. How about the guy who had the courage of conviction to sacrifice the remainder of his young life for the American ideal- freedom of thought and information, freedom from the veil of secrecy? How about the guy who is forbidden any communication, spends his days in solitary confinement under sensory deprivation without being clearly charged? The guy who lives in the forgotten shadow of the biggest movement to resurrect the free flow of information, the “currency of democracy” as Jefferson put it- Bradley Manning.

Apologies- in my rush to work, thought it said “Person.” In that case… how about a photo of same said person- in his present circumstances (which is pretty much what is up as of this morning).

I sent $100. Hope that helps.
