Obama the Invalid

Doug Mills/New York Times

Obama’s Economic View Is Rejected on World Stage

China, Britain and Germany Challenge U.S. — Trade Talks With Seoul Fail, Too.

Going by the Times yesterday, Obama’s current situation is worse than that proverbial car being stuck in a ditch — if you simply consider the front page headline and subhead along with the accompanying photo which appeared on p. A12 (or the color version accompanying the online article).

In reality, yes, we see the Korean President and his wife helping position Obama for a photo.  Given the political context, however (and not just at the summit, but also at home with the confusion and apparent capitulation over Bush’s tax cuts), the harsh photo represents Obama more like a guy who was in the car when it got totaled who not only needs propping, but can barely put one foot in front of the other.

Oh boy, another insulting photo of the president. I guess it’s been difficult for the press to get the shot that makes Obama look like a fool. Here he is in the orient where respect is ritualized and he’s getting pushed around – and by a woman no less!

I’d rather see my president trying to be a nice guy, than wonder how much John Boehner will tip his caddy now that he’s victorious.

Top half, we see the four arms of Vishnu:

…the All-Pervading essence of all beings, the master of and beyond the past, present and future, the creator and destroyer of all existences, one who supports, sustains and governs the Universe …

Bottom half, more like the Three Stooges.

The NY Times, “All The Infotainment That’s Fit To Print”. Party on dudes!

It looks like they’re propping him up, but what they did was shoot him down.

I’s surprised you didn’t choose the NYT’s ‘Lost His Glow’ photo, one I found much more…suggestive.

I see the Koreans got their revenge for Obama having the guts to tell them where they could put their one-sided
    trade agreement.

That is some seriously unflattering schizzle to have on the front of the paper.

This photo, as much as any I’ve seen in a long time captures, in my mind, the mission of the BAG (not the official mission, perhaps, but what I say to people when I mention my blogging stomping grounds): the visual images that accompany stories are at least as important as the stories themselves and when viewed over a period of time, they have a subconscious and additive effect. In the end, we probably derive our understanding of history as much from the images we’ve seen over the years as we do from the summaries that the historians eventually write. Not analyzing the images and thereby letting the visual editors imprint their ideas on our minds without having to defend them is a form of passivity we can no longer afford – because the visual editors seem to be FULLY aware of their roles.

With that in mind, imagine an editor choosing THIS image to represent the president’s trip. How unkind. How petty. How manipulative. NYT gets the ‘ding’ in credibility for this in my book.
