The Power of Newsweek Ramming Rush Down Our Throats Four Days Before the Midterms

With covers, it’s all about timing, baby.

And oh, how sweet that the struggling-for-life Newsweek unveils this seemingly “good anytime,” fair-and-balanced ranking issue today, although the issue, “on its face,” is dated December 8th, the Monday following this coming Tuesday’s critical election. There’s that, of course. And then, there’s 1. the sheer scale of the gigantic one, 2. the humongous identification with POWER, 3. the “#1″ and “Always Right,” and 4. added amplification from the “cash” and the “roar.”

Of course, some would say this is just good design, simply capturing the power “#1″ really has. And I’d say, pair the factors above with the timing and the body language — Rush looming with his mouth open in a gesture of gloating — and it jumps off the page, the screen or the newsstand half as election “come to me, baby” and half as (anticipated) November 2nd backhand slap.

Married life seems to suit the once and future Hutt. Third time’s the charm.

Big smile, inviting us with a humorous twinkle in his eye, a garrulous* restaurateur guiding us to our power table. ‘Course this image blatantly ignores the fact that in 10s of 1000s of hours of public-airways radio jabber Mr Limbaugh has yet to utter anything remotely funny to anyone outside his insecure crypto-racist base. Propaganda as reporting. What matters most™.

    He looks like T-rex, right?

Hand out shoveling Power into his open mouth, advancing toward the viewer with the left hand ready to rise and shove more stuff into his maw.

I read the hand gesture as the tail end of a “FU” flicking of the hand under the chin.

Maybe it’s years of training here at the Bag, but this isn’t Powerful to me; it’s insulting, disappointing, obvious pandering, and gimmicky.

As a potential consumer of print media (am I still, hmm, I don’t know..) this looses me completely.

Oh, and .. shouldn’t this fat idiot be in jail? Wasn’t he abusing illegal drugs and wasn’t he caught and isn’t he all about ‘accountability’? Who’s in charge of following up on that, again? Seems he’s beyond the law, too. Ho, hum.

I immediately saw both the ‘come to papa’ and the backhand slap — but gmoke’s gobbling power comment cracked me up!

Pure coincidence that you used one of Limbaugh’s two favorite phrases? (The other is bend over and grab your ankles.)

He’s ranked rather higher than he should be, he becomes more irrelevant with each passing year. As an AM radio pundit who gets preempted for baseball, he’s just nowhere near the same level as an AM radio pundit who also has a nightly TV show on Fox News.

The country has moved further to the right, ABC is having Andrew F-ing Breitbart do color commentary on the election news, and he’s still just on AM radio, being listened to by an aging audience.

Still, he’s a fitting icon for a failed propaganda/news magazine. He could go on almost any of them, which is why I get all my news from Rolling Stone.

(Now, if they had put Beck or Hannity, that would have been closer to the truth.)

I think it’s classic Newsweek, having it both ways. To the Bag, and all thinking people, who tend to be Left-leaning, the cover appears pro-Left. You see the lack of thoughtful, critical, informed debate on the Right and the conquest there of power over civility and morality. But to the great mass of people who’ll see this cover on the newsstand, this is the Smiling Prophet, who we’d do well to obey his every word. Face it, this is a favorable picture of Rush, the sort of thing his handlers would put on his website. Think of the highly UNfavorable shots of Democrats, esp Dem women, that the media puts out there. This isn’t like those at all.
