My Pick(s) of the Afghan War 9th Anniversary Slideshows

Tomas Munita/A.P.

With the Afghan War entering year ten today, I was attracted by this shot from one of the perfunctory anniversary slideshows, this at the Sacramento Bee.  Beyond the portraits of Rummy in Iraq and Afghanistan looking more “McNamara-ish” every day, I’ve always been intrigued by that mural in the Afghan Presidential Palace.  Especially in this instance, I can’t decide if that branch erupting from the earth is something organic, or signifies some horrible mutation that, like a vein, connects a morally corrupt set of partners. Of course, what I also appreciate is how much the photo nails the essence of the Bush Administration, which was: they only heard what they wanted to hear.

Update 10/7 8:15 pm -

In the name of equal time, I’ve added this second photo from the SacBee slideshow, expanding the culpability for the war. This view of Obama, mediating talks with Karzai and Zardari at the White House, couldn’t be more cynical.  The Presidential seal as halo calls out Obama for propagating an idealized picture of corrupt partners and a military engagement that has been mostly disastrous.

With that Seuss-like Christmas tree, I think it’s clear Karzai is pointing at the Grinch.

I do not understand why the 2005 photo has been selected. It does not justify the war that goes on today. How could you blame it now on the past administration? Do you really want us to concentrate on the tree and on the evil Rummy? The slide show has plenty of pictures that are more meaningful. It seems people forget that Obama is in charge and has been in charge. The drones’ work in Pakistan, the killings and horror in Afghanistan are all his responsibility. He is responsible for all the death (civilian having priority) that have occurred since his taking over.

Maybe they needed to plug something in that was visually compelling from “the middle” period? As I suggest up front, these anniversaries, and their “commemoration,” have become pretty perfunctory.

Sorry, I didn’t realize at first your comment was directed at The Bag. It’s not that I don’t share your frustration, but my selection was as much expessive of the fact that the coverage of the war is so random, scattershot, co-dependent.

Another point about bearing witness about BushCo as it relates to Obama. Barack can bash the previous Administration all day and night when it comes to the economy, but, in his silence and denial about their actions, he’s been completely complicit.
