Goolsbee’s White Board and the GOP’s Big Red Eggs

Goolsbee’s White House White Board tax cut presentation represents a major breakthrough for Democratic framing (even if it makes most thinking Democrats cringe).  What’s it got going for it?

• Goolsbee. He’s totally telegenic.  The anti-Romer.  (Beat me up if you like, but the sales job, as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, doesn’t stop at the West Wing.)

• Simplicity and repetition — the primary elements of most effective Republican framing. (OK, now roll your eyes.)

• It’s visual.

…Duh, you say? Yeah, well, I’m still waiting for a name/”word picture” for Obama’s “health care legislation” (besides: “Obama’s “health care legislation”) that paints a constructive picture in my head. Did it take the GOP longer than 5 minutes to come up with “ObamaCare”?

• The craftiest thing about this, though? It’s the subtle FU to this.

I agree the Whitehouse Whiteboard is a brilliant move and one they should continue to take advantage of.

Here is by far the best visual and verbal explanation of the health care reform bill:

I don’t understand why every democrat is not emailing this video to their constituents.

Thanks for that link….the length is probably what dampens the popularity of the health reform animation. It wasn’t hard to watch though…

Excellent visual compromise with the white board. This is the kind of information for which we have plenty of computer graphic displays. Of course, computer graphics lack a certain human element which can cause the viewer to put up defenses, introduce skepticism, etc. Whoever drew this board captured a casual legibility that is both informal and informative.

I think, in general, the us v. them argument is, relatively speaking a loser. Though it should not be. But you know…the Dems in the Senate are afraid (are always afraid, and sometimes with good reason)that somewhere in the next thirty days someone is going to run a 30 second commercial featuring some Mom and Pop look alike, who run a local hardware store, saying into the camera ‘that the Dems tax increase will raise taxes on my small business. And I was just getting ready to hire people’.

Not as an economic strategy, but as a political strategy, I would have preferred the Obama to take the position that ‘ok, folks, the media keeps running those polls about how Americans are more worried about the deficit than any other issue…and those damn teabaggers shouting at me about running up record deficits (to get us out of the hole Bush put us in) and that prick Bonher doing the same thing…..let them ruminate on this….I’ll give a speech saying NO ONE gets a so called tax cut. We dodged our responsibility to pay for the war in the first decade of this century. And by god it won’t happen again on my watch. This is a nation that lives by it means again!

What could the billionaires say to that, in the short run? The media would love it. The people would feel good making a sacrifice. (at least in the short run they would feel good) The GOP? what could they say to that since they have chosen to make the deficit, and ‘runaway spending’ and ‘bailouts’ there primary laments. They would have to have choked on it. And who knows….may by some long shot it would have been good policy.
