Let the Energy, Natural Resources and Extinguishing the Animals Committee Come to Order

Barry Blitt

What’s so brilliant about Blitt’s New Yorker Oil Spill cover — in the identification we feel with the animals — is how much it reflects our own helplessness, focuses our rage, and fantasizes that we animals, too, might somehow sit in judgment over the big oil machine.

  • Gasho

We can identify with the animals because we’re mad – and that executive is the focus of our anger, too.

You can flip it, too, though.

But really, isn’t it also a picture of nature putting HUMANS on trial? They are the ones covered in oil, after all.. not us. Our demand for oil, gas, cars, heat, fresh food from around the planet, multiple annual coast to coast and international airline trips, lights on all the time, computers humming and the monster power-suck that is our fabulous internet? We are all buying what this guy is selling. Until we realize that – we’ll identify with the poor animals and feel like victims (even while sipping our lattés, driving to the stadium for the night game, with our kids watching DVD’s in the back seat.. etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc).

Now put yourself in the place of that executive on the cover (and remember you’ve still got your car keys in one hand, latté in the other, wearing a leather jacket, still tan from your tropical vacation, and if you’re a typical American, 40 lbs. overweight from eating too much factory farmed overprocessed meat.) Now how does that cover look??

I not only like and agree with the way you’re reading this, I plead guilty!

hell is living in a world where there is no justice.

  • Herb Meowing

Note how the witness makes no eye contact with any member of the panel…explicity ignoring their plight.

What’s he ‘holding onto’ in his left hand while swearing to tell the whole truth?

And why does he get two glasses of clean water?
