Crude Comparison

It’s a cruel montage.

While the Gulf is alternately drowning in crude and going up in flames, the Germans are putting these elegant-looking offshore windmills into service in the North Sea this week.

And then, isn’t it ironic this photo — especially in light of Obama’s drilling announcement last week — was an almost unanimous choice for Wednesday’s “pic of the day” galleries?

These two pictures together are stunning. Can we be at the tipping point between old-world and new-world energy choices?

Will the horrible ecological and economical damage in the Gulf cause the offshore drilling plans to be reversed? Obama couldn’t have seen it coming, but in the end could it work out perfectly, whereby Obama short circuits the “drill baby drill” political argument we saw in ‘08 AND keeps our coastlines clear of these horrific rigs?

And what of alternative energies? I love the image of him looking at that enormous turbine blade. I think he’s looking right at the future. If he’s inspired, and he’s got some political capital in his second term (or even in the second half of his first) he could really bring that industry to life.

Will people see the plans to build 12 new nuclear plants in the climate bill as a gaffe also? The NRC on their website says that there will be 12 cancer deaths for every 20 year reactor operating term. http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr1437/v1/part06.html#_1_169 second bullet point.

12 cancer deaths sounds like an understatement. are they counting the employees who get sick working in this kind of environment?

i can’t find it now but during the healthcare debate i ran across an article that described how nuclear workers still have to fight to get treatment and compensation for getting sick on the job.
