Obama Weatherproofed

Obama Weatherproof AP.jpg
Obama Weatherproof.jpg
Given how Obama has altered the rules of the game when it comes to political vs. cultural celebrity and the branding of the president, I’d say the Weatherproof ad (and they did license the AP photo) is a case of back-atcha. (The backstory.)

And then, before one concludes it’s disrespectful or inappropriate for a savvy clothing company to use the President’s image to sell a jacket, I’d say corporate media has thrown that door wide open this past year — with Obama enabling them all the way. After all, hasn’t big media been bombarding the public with Obama’s image with all kinds of gratuitous fluff, not to serve any interest of news but instead to feed it’s own commercial interests and their own own brands? Along those lines, why should Weatherproof be excluded just because they’re in a different market niche?

And then, in response to the jacket affair, White House spokesman Bill Burton says the administration “has a long-standing policy against the use of Obama’s name and likeness for commercial purposes.” So, does that cover Michelle’s appearance this week, along with the White House Executive Chef, on the Food Network’s massively-promoted special White House edition of “Iron Chef America”? (In terms of the blurring of the lines, here’s the White House Chef even blogging about it.) Before dismissing the appearance as if it was a PSA for healthy eating (though hard to believe if you saw what Emeril and Batali did to those vegetables), I’m wondering just how big was that ad buy?

If there is anything to be learned here, it’s probably that the White House valets should be cutting the labels off of all new togs.

What’s the actual deal here? Was this photo shot for the ad, or was it an existing photo Weatherproof paid for the rights to? Did Obama have control over his image, or was AP the copyright holder? Who got paid for it? It would be helpful to know this before commenting.

Whoops, forgot the link to NYT article. It’s at bottom of the post above. The coat company, known for its marketing wherewithal, inspected images of Obama at The Great Wall and verified he was wearing their duds. They licensed the photo from AP and bought the billboard. Also tried to buy ads in major newspapers but were turned down. They’re getting a lot of buzz otherwise, though.

Saw this on NY1 last night and thought it was interesting that all the people they interviewed on the street in Times Square seemed to think this was a staged photo shot specifically for that company. Definitely different circumstances here, but it certainly recalls the Annie Leibovitz photo shoot of Mikhail Gorbachev and his Louis Vuitton bag.

Glad to see the blue shirt peeking out. Is this a New Year’s Resolution? The blue dress shirt the Obama wore when he gave the presser on Thursday afternoon was the first I’ve seen after years of him wearing white exclusively.
As far as acknowledging garment makers, I recall that his patronage of Hart Marx suits goes back many years. Michelle’s dresses and dressmakers are covered in great detail, even to interviewing the shop owner in Chicago. Each must benefit from that amount of publicity, even if not as blatant as the billboard.

I have no idea why… maybe it’s Michelle’s pose (chest out, shoulders back, large smile, leading foot) … but that photograph of her sent me digging for this. The whole tableau strikes me as equally contrived. I think we’ve truly reached the place where we can no longer spoof our politicians. They were “born” as parodies of themselves.

    Good Lord…
…that orange and blue combo is hideous.

Love the way the guy’s orange floater shoes are the exact opposite of Obama’s spiky blue shoes– in every way.
They match her skirt pretty well too, about as well as her own shoes match her sweater.

If I were the First Lady and got a chance to cook with Alton Brown, I’d do it. And I’d thumb my nose at the critics, because a job where you live in a fish bowl and somebody says something ugly about every damn thing you do – (hey, blue shark, what are you wearing?) – oughta have some perks.
    Geez.

Strictly speaking, the Iron Chef special wasn’t a PSA for healthy eating but a PSA for sustainable, local food.

The second photo is superficial and has hillbilly aura. The colors hideous and incongruous, the characters staged together in unbecoming way just like the colors. No sense photo, should have been axed.

I just wish she’d wear clothes that looked like they fit her.

Complaining about the First Lady’s activities being “gratuitous fluff” is rather silly. What else has any First Lady’s activities been? I will exclude Eleanor Roosevelt from being “fluff”, but that’s about it.
