Pipe Dream Come True

20091107issuecovUS400.jpg

Central Europe 20 years later, if glimpsed from 1989, would have seemed a glorious pipe-dream.”   – from: Walls in the Mind. Cover story/The Economist./Nov 5th 2009.

Do you read this from west to east, indicating an economic charge flowing into the old “Eastern Bloc?”

And where (if a cigar in not always a cigar) does the stodgy Economist get off capturing the “fall-of-the-wall” anniversary this way?

My experience reading the Economist is that the pictures and captions are often wry, witty and sometimes naughty; in a way it takes an American an extra ‘take’ or two to comprehend.

My immediate connection was to Dr Strangelove – riding the missile to mutually assured destruction. A very cold war statement – maybe indicating that the “end” of the cold war is questionable.

I also thought of Dr. Strangeglove. Or maybe the man is tired of straddling the two sides.

And now we learn that our freedom loving leaders were not in favor of this event.

There was a famous (at least in my mind!) economist cover, i think back in the late 90’s. It was a picture of two camels fucking – front view, it was clear the male was mounting the female. At least one of them (can’t quite remember) had it’s mouth open making whatever sounds a camel makes while in the act. The camels didn’t look particularly happy.
The caption was “The Trouble With Mergers” (for an article about corporate mergers, of course)

September 1994. It was a side view – I remember incorrectly. The female looking at the camera. Doesn’t look happy to me. Great picture.
