Obama’s Family Photograph

Obama APEC.jpg

Really, that’s what they call the final APEC summit pic.

Although the right might run with it as “Obama as ‘furner”,” I like the “goodness of fit” for our first “Pacific president.”

The designer of the shirts, by the way, refers to the style as “Asian fusion,” incorporating Chinese, Indian and Malay traditions with a Mandarin collar. Obama had a choice of three colors, either blue, red or green. President Hu, of course, chose red.

(I should also add that, compared to previous APEC get ups, Obama got off lucky.)

Even the get-up at the summit attended by Clinton was not as bad as the polka-dot tunics Bush and Putin had to don at one point.
I can’t decide if Obama should have gone with red… just to tweak the wingnuts. I expect they’re already frothing over the photo of him bowing to the emperor of Japan.

Indeed they are- our own little remora is (see “Gimme a W”).

A Loincloth theme for the next Summit might be fun.

Over here in Singapore it was rumoured that Obama would arrive too late for the big group photo, so the ‘will he or won’t he wear the shirt’ was quite the topic. That, and the APEC induced traffic snarl-ups…
But if the New World Order discussions get too much, you can always find solace in one of Singapore’s finest Irish pubs – O’Bamas:

It is revealing that AP describes the event as “the funny shirt” moment. The normalization of “western” attire means that all other sartorial expressions are deemed “ethnic”, “local” and thus when westerners dress in them they have “gone native”. Even African Americans, who are also westerners, endure the same labeling. If a black woman for instance is coifed in braids or with her hair “natural”, it is viewed as “ethnic”.

Oh yes, and I wanted to also say that President Obama sure looks great in that shirt! He has look that blends in with the people and situation where ever he is in the world.
