Sotomayor Signs On

Roberts Sotomayor.jpg

This is the most politically telling shot I saw yesterday from Sandra Sotomayor’s investiture and first day as a Supreme. That’s Chief Supreme John Roberts (appropriately right and facing away).

The guests included President Obama, Vice President Biden, the eight other members of the Supreme Court, and . . . . Ricky Martin. Ricky Martin? How did he get in there?
Yikes! After what Sen. Jeff Sessions did with “wise Latina,” can you imagine what he might have done with the Ricky Martin connection. Here are the lyrics to Livin’ La Vida Loca:

She’s into superstitions black cats and voodoo dolls.
I feel a premonition that girl’s gonna make me fall.
She’s into new sensations new kicks in the candle light.
She’s got a new addiction for every day and night.
She’ll make you take your clothes off and go dancing in the rain.
She’ll make you live her crazy life but she’ll take away your pain
like a bullet to your brain. Come On!

I thought of you when I saw this shot among the dozen at TPM — it’s almost hyperbole as symbolism, and clearly a distortion of the reality, which was that, after many shots together and handshakes and all the rest, Roberts was leaving Sotomayor to her waiting family for more “at the base of the steps” shots . . .

It’s only telling if one assumes Sotomayor is or will be a liberal “lefty”. Republican hysteria aside, her record on the intermediate appellate courts does not substantiate that view.

Right and left is a matter of perspective here. For the guy standing at the top of the stairs and looking South Roberts is on the left and Satomayer is on the right. The more interesting (maybe “telling”) point is that Roberts is looking somewhat backwards and towards Court–more introspective–while Satomayer is looking outwards and away from the Court. This too is hard to interpret, but in one sense at least it implies opening v. closing or restricting of perspectives. And whether Sotomayer ends up being the darling of the left or not (I agree with the post above which suggests a much more moderate jurisprudence than many on the left will want to see) she almost certainly invite more of an “enlarged mentality” than I tend to associate with Roberts or others on the most conservative wing of the bench.

she looked beautiful. sexy even. power is an aphrodisiac?

on 11, even scalia is happy for her.

    Yeah really?! Sandra?
    How about Sonia?
I think that the picture is interesting, looks so washed out and tired, just like the left/right, inclusion/exclusion ideas that we assume when we look at the picture.

Couldn’t Ricky Martin come up with the Spanish for “livin’”?
