Our Man at the G20 (#2): Radical Split

In response to the sign in the window, though, who was the enemy?

Was it the 50 – 75 (wannabe) anarchists operating in Pittsburgh last week who, having lured twice as many or more college students to join them in various confrontations with the police, succeeded in overshadowing what was otherwise a peaceful cross-section of marchers and demonstrators?

Or, was it the runaway, financially-deregulated corporate state symbolized by the towers looming over the “have nots” — the young, the working poor and the flagging middle class — insulated by and behind the militarized “zero tolerance” police presence?

I believe Books Alive answered the BAGS questions in a previous post @ http://www.bagnewsnotes.com/2009/09/outside-the-pittsburgh-g20-swinging-the-lumber.html#comments
What I find scary about this pic is not the anarchists but that foreboding Big Brother sign – ‘KNOW ??? ENEMY.

I didn’t even notice the reflected eyes to the right of “Know the Enemy” at first. Almost looks like a pissed off version of the singing and dancing frog from that old Warner Brothers cartoon involving the guy trying to get rich with his performing amphibian only to be sabotaged when it refuses to dance on command.
The reflected circles on the right resemble a chain around the protesters but wouldn’t necessarily have to be a negative binding. The coppery color resonates with the word “together” in the sagging banner above.
As a fan of Robert Anton Wilson I’m tempted rant about the significance of the number 2231 above the red doors but will spare you.
Twisted white banner resembles a segment of DNA.
I was taken aback by the accusation of “wannabe” when referring to anarchists. I certainly can’t say there weren’t any wannabes there but nor would I brand any of them as such without evidence.
Here’s a good article from Bill Quigly on counterpunch giving a perspective on the protests.
    http://counterpunch.org/quigley09282009.html
“The G20 in Pittsburgh showed us how pitifully fearful our leaders have become.
What no terrorist could do to us, our own leaders did.
Out of fear of the possibility of a terrorist attack, authorities militarize our towns, scare our people away, stop daily life and quash our constitutional rights.
For days, downtown Pittsburgh, home to the G20, was a turned into a militarized people-free ghost town. Sirens screamed day and night. Helicopters crisscrossed the skies. Gunboats sat in the rivers. The skies were defended by Air Force jets. Streets were barricaded by huge cement blocks and fencing. Bridges were closed with National Guard across the entrances. Public transportation was stopped downtown. Amtrak train service was suspended for days…”

Following chmidgall’s observation – ‘I certainly can’t say there weren’t any wannabes there but nor would I brand any of them as such without evidence’
    I offer:
Jaggi Singh, a polite well educated Canadian citizen who calls himself an anarchist. He has never thrown rocks, smashed windows or done the destructive things which the corporate media feasts upon. He has driven Local, Provincial, Federal and International police crazy and tied the Canadian Justice system in knots for over thirty years. He has an almost perfect record in proving the police and that the courts are not always defending peace or seeking justice.

I like the wide eyed owl next to the ominous sign, this is a weird shot. It’s cool that this image follows the last posted where we have leader that probably won’t hosting a G# summit any time soon. But back to the pic at hand. While I was following this story, I wondered how many of those young people were actually from Pittsbugh or Pennsylvania or Maryland, Ohio etc. Something tells me that some of this crowd have been in a G# march before maybe while touring Eurpore, Asia, South America etc. Then I also recall a “shocking video” of a young man being tossed in the back of a Ford Crown Victoria (silver)by men dressed in active combat uniforms. Somehow I wasn’t as shocked as I thought I’d be? My lack of shock is what really jarred me a bit. I haven’t done the research but I am curious of what happened to that young man or what his infraction was? People need the right to assemble peacefully and express themselves openly and honestly that is truely what it means to be an American. But as for this photo? It brought a lot to mind.
