Beck’s Visual Analysis

1. To post this video and then dismiss Beck’s narrative as simply bizarre is to completely miss the point.

Non-sense and anti-intellectualism form the crux of what Beck is about. What you can bank on is a delusional form of argumentation and case-making where simple and highly repetitive hate- and scare-mongering is couched around a (indecipherable) internal logic that, by virtue of Beck’s conviction, convinces those susceptible that he knows exactly what he’s talking about. It’s textbook paranoia.

2. Writes Hissyspit in a discussion thread at DemocraticUnderground:

“It’s association technique. It doesn’t have to make sense. It’s just about putting the things next to each other. He mentioned Obama and the Green “czar” along with Marx and Lenin and the Rockefeller foundation. It makes no sense, but it doesn’t have to.”

It’s a good take. What Beck is doing is further linking the left-wing to the bogey man of communism and fascism, and doing it by attacking omnipresent but otherwise hifalutin artistic symbolism.

3. Another good take in the same discussion thread:

Notice how he’s using the word “progressive” now instead of liberal, to drag it through the slime and demonize it?

4. What’s chilling and completely noteworthy about this is the further demagoguery of the left through an attack on art.

Just as Hitler applied a degenerate label to most contemporary art, Beck is attacking art and sculpture as a left-wing subliminal vehicle — a Trojan Horse — to brainwash and control the masses. The arts and artistic freedom represent a sacred hallmark of free society. As TPM reader SG describes (as cited by Josh Marshall), the insanity of the wingnuts has been mainstreamed over the past few weeks and months and has completely crossed the line. Beck is in very dangerous territory here.

It isn’t just Mr. Beck that has drifted into dangerous territory…..

  • bernini

I see Glenny-boy made sure to mention that he spent a lot of time looking at the Rockefeller bas-relief of the “strong, strong” man with his “wife” present.
He absolutely takes some sort of antidepressants before his show to keep this act up. Truly sad. Then you realize how much he connects with his audience. I guess we have a decent portion of the population experiencing a similar zeitgeist. Maybe that’s all Obama needs to do to win the health care debate, issue free Zoloft to all!

  • http://ralfast.wordpress.com Rafael

Drifted? He is practically building his own Tower of Babel right in the middle of it.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/evilpoet EvilPoet

ugh. What a whiny annoying voice he has. I don’t know how anyone can stand to listen to him for two seconds let alone tune in show after show.

  • http://www.victorfitzsimons.net Victor F

I find it very hard to follow Mr. Beck’s train of thought. It is fractured and grasping. Of course Diego Rivera had a motive to his artwork! He was a vocal Communist!
The thing is, if Beck wants to talk about art as propaganda, the history of it stretches as far back as human civilization itself. Roman bas-reliefs depicting the strength of the empire, Egyptian bas-reliefs showing the conquests of kings. Fast forward centuries to US War Bond posters showing the strength and nobility of Allied forces standing against the evil Axis. “Guernica” showing the terrors of war. Art, being communication, is often a form of propaganda. I guess if Beck has a problem with that, he should stick with the Impressionists.
Furthermore, his denigration of so-called “Communist symbolism” is really a denigration of the industrialism that set America up as an empire. This country was built on the backs of workers, not bankers. When the banks fall, it will still the workers and farmers who will be at the foundation of American industry. He would do well to not shit on the people who make his food and build his cars.

This whole thing is just standard fare in the conspiracy nutosphere. Rockefeller and Rothschild are their standard beasts at the top of the pyramid that controls the world.
Beck is “merely” mainstreaming conspiracy nuts. Next expect talk about some of the following:
    - Bilderberg
    - Bohemians’ lodge
    - Symbols on the US Dollars
He will however steer clear of the CFR/Kissinger narratives as that would cut a little too close to the bone. That’s the problem with such conspiracy theories: although they are generally anti-governement and therefore slant towards anti-progressive/liberal, not all of their talking points are always very easy to classify. Beck may have to editorialize, pick and chose, spin some of these theories to his own bias, but that’s obviously where he’s getting all this stuff from. The “group of people who work over generations to control the world under the guise of progressiveness but who are really satanists/fascists/occultists” is straight out of an Alex Jones narrative.

From Wikipedia’s entry on Rockefeller Center: ‘In 1962, a plaque was placed at the plaza with a list of principles in which John D. Rockefeller Jr. believed, first expressed by him in 1941. It begins with: “I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” and includes a list of other lifelong beliefs encompassing free enterprise and religion.’
Beck must not have seen that….

HOW CAN THIS GUY GET AWAY WITH THIS POISON ON TV??… THIS IS NOT FREEDOM OF SPEECH, THIS IS POISON… how can he get away with telling all this lies on TV? those images were there during the George Bush Administration… WHY DIDN’T HE POINT THAT OUT DURING THAT WAR CRIMINALS REIGN?… AMAZING

This isn’t new. Remember all the todo over the Piss Christ? This happens all the time in America cause there is a strong, wide streak of Phillistine in our culture.

The sad thing to all this is, is that this media clown terrorist makes absolute “sense” to today’s book burning equivalents.

  • kickstand

What’s interesting is that he doesn’t really draw any conclusions, he just insinuates that there are diabolical conclusions to be drawn.

  • countrymouse

He says, “…if you or your wife watch The Today Show…”. I don’t have a wife. I am a wife. Well, at least Glenn Beck is clearly not talking to me.

I don’t think it’s Beck who is in dangerous territory…it’s us. I can’t imagine what it is that will sober these people up. What is the “Have you no shame?” moment?

    via tpm reader sg:
So my question is, when is the White House, the Democratic infrastructure and the progressive press/blogosphere going to stop laughing and start pushing back on this?
we have pushed back. color of change boycott campaign has been remarkably successful. responding to objections against beck for calling obama a racist, more than 40 commercial sponsors have dropped glenn beck’s show. beck also admitted the boycott forced him to go on haitus from fox. cynics used to belittle petitions as ineffective and a waste of time. nah huh.
Clearly, laughter and ridicule is not a sufficient response and is not working.
i beg to differ. it’s a mistake to underestimate their impact. mockery and ridicule got republican officials to walk back their death panel smears. confronted on camera, mockery & ridicule got republicans officials to recant their birther claims, because they recognized not to acknowlede obama’s citizenship made them look like a lunatic. like most political operatives, rove understands the power of mockery. ridicule of kerry (purple heart bandaids) worked to deny him the presidency. saul alinsky lists it as one of his principles:
RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)
some of the other rules sound pretty pedestrian at first blush. you have to read the anecdotes of how these techniques were applied to recognize their full power. if you read the rest of alinsky’s rules, it reads like the playbook instructions given to teabaggers to disrupt townhalls. corporate interests have perverted alinsky tactics for their own benefit.

Beck and the other right wingers are playing catch-up football. They have to put the ball up in the air near the sidelines and hope they don’t make a mistake. Catch-up football is low-percentage play, and you don’t choose it unless you’re desperate.
When the Republicans enjoyed the advantages of incumbency they didn’t have to take the opposition seriously . . . and they didn’t. But the Democrats now have the luxury of running the ball on every play, letting the clock run down. When Obama addresses both houses of Congress, he won’t have to do anything more than stay calm and relaxed about the need for health care reform.
Catch-up football sometimes works, but very often it doesn’t. Instead of moving the ball quickly down the field, the quarterback throws an interception because everyone knows he has to.
Glenn Beck is confusing everybody. Even the people who like him are wondering why he’s dredging up controversies from the 1930’s, fergoshsakes.

  • bernini

All your bases belong to us?
I appreciate the hurry up offense analogy noted above, but find the statement: “Even the people who like him are wondering why he’s dredging up controversies from the 1930’s” to be slightly bat shit insane.
There is not a single person on this wonderful closed loop, clock ticking planet that truly likes Glenn Beck and is simultaneously wondering in the slightest bit why he is dredging up vitriol, smearing with innuendo, and peddling in non-stop Us v Them. You are either Us or Them in the Beck World of alternate reality. I don’t think there are any wavering souls in his target demographic experiencing hand wringing moments of “why Glenn, why?”
I am ready for the flame out, but suspect this clown has several more booster stages of absolute bullshit to burn through before he comes crashing back to terra firma. In the interim, he will keep demarking that line in the sand, lest you forget: hate and ignorance one side, basic social contract and simple humanism on the other side.

We were all successful in getting becks sponsors to flee.
This man is evil. he is crazed and dangerous. He is the one that sound like he could be Hitler’s propaganda agent.
    Mock outrage, innuendo and smear.

  • Rene ala Carte

I had a chance to see some of this and all I can say is that even P.T. Barnum would be impressed by the gullibility of Beck’s audience.
Anti-intellectualism has very strong roots in America and the current right wing propagandists are exploiting it for all it’s worth.

  • http://leftistmoon.wordpress.com Wordsmith

I’m just hoping I can say this concisely and tactfully.
Glenn Beck is too stupid to breathe.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/manamongst manamongst

DennisQ to further your analogy, Glenn Beck is that last second play where they hike the ball and just keep lateralling it…but with our situation they’ve started doing it down 31-10 with 6 minutes left in the quarter.
Also equated to in basketball (Now this is more accurate toward Obama) Hack-a-Shaq!! Beck is the scrub that’s been on the bench the whole game, and they’re gonna use ever foul they can. Losing 20 sponsers was only the 3rd foul, they (Fox/News Corp) doesn’t care they only cancelled sponsorship during his show. But what’s funny is the obvious disdain and joke the rest of his teammates take him for. They know he is a temporary gimmick for a team that’s down big willing to stoop too those gaming tactics.
The only question is will they sub him in aka bench him, or will they let him foul-out? My money is on fouling out. I’m pretty sure Beck and his lawyers aren’t smarter than News Corp, and I’ll bet within that lucrative contract he signed there’s some form of moral clause.

It’s common practice to put only leftist art in the category of “ideological art” or propaganda — it becomes a pejorative label. Note that you had to reach for posters as propaganda for WWII recruiting.
But all art is necessarily ideological, and Impressionism was not without ideology: it reinforced and represented the ideology of the middle class and bourgeoisie, the ruling class of the time.

Nauseating. He’s not even entertaining. A used car salesman at best…and a lousy one at that.
We know what Beck is. But what does it say for his followers??!!!

  • Jeff

It wasn’t even a hammer in the first art piece. It was a damn shovel. The moron can’t even identify tools correctly.

  • chuck

i know! i wish glenn beck would dispel these rumors that he raped and killed a young girl in 1990!

  • rip

I don’t think the FCC has a say in cable content.

  • http://www.doves2day.blogspot.com g

Didn’t Beck already talk about symbols on US coins – was it he who got his panties in a twist because the Mercury dime had the Roman symbol of fasces (a bundle of sticks) upon it? Of course, said dime having been designed prior to the Fascist regimes, and the fasces being an ancient Roman symbol for strength in unity…..
I expect Beck to some out for the Silver Standard any day now….

Glenn Beck – Art Historian! Hilarious!

  • tinwoman

Oh fer chrissakes, this was just an excuse for Beck to show a man’s naked buns and a woman’s naked titties, albeit in sculpture, on tee-vee.
Has anybody ever told Beck that Fascists and Communists are not the same thing…..morever, that they were mortal enemies?
Was Roosevelt a Communist? Is that the question? Seriously? And Diego Riveira–um…..he was an outspoken Commie, so who can be shocked at this content in his paintings? So left wing art exists in the States–SO WHAT? Should we burn it all in a quest for some kind of ideological purity? What would we call that, exactly?
What would it even matter anymore if Rossevelt were Communist? It’s just creating an atmosphere of hysteria. Maybe that’s the point.

The White House is not laughing, because they know it all true.

it’s those firm buttocks that’re driving him crazy in with this piece I’m guessing..
I had an artist friend once who hoped one day to paint something so provacative he would be literally burned at the stake for it.. martyrdom jihad is on lots of improperly medicated peoples’ minds.
anyway. art police. no.. you’re not hired blech, sorry…

I sometimes think this guy is ill, but I’ve become certain he’s just impersonating a sick person. The one that’s really worthy of censure is the low-life that pays him and puts him at a microphone. That’s the guy who’s really a threat to our way of life, as we have seen lately – a propaganda source to comfort the comfortable and ensure that the afflicted remain afflicted.
I work with a couple of his fans, living evidence of the failure of the educational system.
