We Are All Neda

Neda protest Paris.jpg

On the ritual fortieth day after her murder, combine the flowers, the placards and the advance of the marchers and there’s the impression, fed by the deepening fissures in Iran, that Neda Agha Soltan has been seeded a thousand times over.

(image: Jacques Brinon/A.P.caption: People hold placards bearing images of Iranian Neda Agha Soltan, the 27-year-old whose death beamed around the world on the Internet became a rallying cry for opponents of the regime, during a demonstration against Iran’s clampdown on opposition activists, at the Trocadero near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Saturday, July 25, 2009. Protesters across the world on Saturday called on Iran to end its clampdown on opposition activists, demanding the release of hundreds rounded up during demonstrations against the country’s disputed election.)

First thing I thought was the final scene from “V for Vendetta,” where crowds wearing Guy Fawkes masks gather outside Parliament, confronting, and overwhelming the police through sheer numbers.

The irony is pretty rich isn’t it?

I’m no authority on Iran, but reading between the lines you get the impression Ahmedinajad is seriously, if not fatally weakened, and could well be gone. That represents some sort of triumph for Obama, who inspired the anti-Ahmedinajad party in the elections, and who wisely declined to play Great Satan after the crackdown.

    What a powerful image. Awesome.

A welcomed counter to an image that has forever seared itself unto our consciousness…

Aren’t the French wonderful? We can learn a lot from them. This is a wonderful picture – thanks.

This is a moving image. It is a sea of “the same person.” We have become used to seeing digitally enhanced crowds, but there is something very organic in this ocean of the same face, elevated by the violent story of this woman and her country. It speaks of a unity that will not be broken.

reminds me of that scene where rebel slaves stand up one by one to proclaim “i am spartacus.”
reza aslan says “Islam is undergoing a period of reformation.” sure looks like it.

I have a theory that at about roughly every 500 years, there is some sort of religious reformation in the world. It’s a shaky theory but just for a flyby:
Judaism was established around 2000BC and was almost annihilated when its people were taken into captivity by Babylon/Assyria around 500 BC.
Christianity was established ca. 0 and went through a lasting split with the Protestant Reformation ca. 1500AD.
Islam was established ca. 500AD and is now going through its turmoil in 2000AD.
There were other events in 500 year intervals in between but I haven’t mowed the lawn enough to really flesh that out yet.
