Bush/Cheney Suppressed Global Warming Images

when the evidence of global warming (courtesy of their own spy satellites) was staring them in the face, not one speck of evidence ever informed Bush and Cheney's behavior

With the availability of all that whiz-bang U.S. security technology, the paranoid team of Bush/Cheney couldn’t produce one speck of credible evidence of Iraqi WMD. But then, when the evidence of global warming (courtesy of their own spy satellites) was staring them in the face, not one speck of evidence ever informed their behavior, let alone leaked out to the American people … until the Obama Administration declassified these photos last week. It’s right there in black-and-white. Or, enveloping black and memory of white.

And then, adding to the saccharine of what you can-and-can’t see from certain states of the union, these images were taken of the Alaskan port of Barrow.

The Guardian has the backstory.

They suppressed a lot of stuff like this, and also from the other direction. Early in Bush’s 1st term, there was a show up at the Smithsonian that consisted of stunning photographs of the Anwr wilderness area that the Repugs are dying to drill. Pressure was put on the Smithsonian (I use the passive because I’m still not sure where it came from) to take the exhibit down.
They moved it to the basement.
Uncle Dick Cheney is really just Uncle Joe Stalin reborn, and ever so slightly constrained while in office by whatever forces constrained him. Otherwise, who knows how many Americans would have just been disappeared and never seen or heard from again. And you can all be damn sure he’d still be in the White House if he could be.

The other half of all this is that even if you can get one of the global warming deniers to admit to the fact that the planet’s temperatures are rising and that the ice caps are melting, etc., they, just like Sen. Inhofe (R) from Oklahoma, maintain that it has nothing to do with human activity.

Last year Barrow ice, this year no Barrow ice, is not strong evidence of global warming. Just as this year my town cold, last year my town warm, is not strong evidence of global cooling.
Hey cool, I was on that airstrip for about 30 minutes in March ‘07! Plenty of ice then…
Of course the earth’s climate is warming. Of course we’re doing it. And we’re screwed, sort of, actually. Judging from my own interactions with real-life climate scientists, which are not insignificant.

If you look at the earth overall, there has been a cooling trend through the last ten years.
As a statistician, I can straight up tell you that one sample is not significant evidence to prove or disprove a theory. It’s especially hard to infer that when there is more evidence from that same year pushing in the other direction.
There is climate change. There is a lot of data that proves that. We’ve been able to track temperature changes through history (I do not remember the method… It’s been a month or two since I’ve read through the research), and the earth has gotten to ten degrees higher (Celcius) as an average temperature. They have also shown that carbon dioxide levels generally begin increasing after a warming trend starts. For example, the last little warming trend began in the mid to late 1800s. Carbon dioxide increases came much later. Carbon dioxide levels are still increasing despite the recent (last ten years) cooling trend.
Besides, the number one advocate of the global warming theory absolutely refuses to debate on the subject. Why would that be?
Why would the government tax something that is used by everyone? It seems too suspicious… Who benefits here? Do they really believe that taxing an action will help the environment? Many of the provisions wouldn’t tax nearly enough to provide something that would even have a marginal effect on the environment’s well being.
A scare theory like this is the perfect government cash cow.

Wow. You’re like the perfect mindless troll, posting the perfect standard list of global-warming-denier talking points. I’m almost impressed.

  • Tena

    Word.
He just missed the part about – hey, it’s a change. So what, we’ve seen changes before.
Like how Pompeii changed, after Vesuvius erupted.

  • RJ

I listed a set of talking points that are backed by data. I don’t know why I would be called “the perfect mindless troll.”
Regardless, by your standards I could say that the earth is undergoing a dramatic cooling trend. There have been more than 3,000 record low temperatures recorded this summer. If I took one of those spots and put it up as evidence like what was done above, would I be right? No.
Besides being one of the many that use that weak and unfounded rebuttal when debating global warming, what can you bring in that says otherwise? How do global warming advocates explain the recent cooling trend, given that carbon dioxide emissions have increased?

which marks the beginning of the industrial age.

whose line are you parroting? rush? do you mean gore? what do you mean he refuses to debate? gore got grilled for almost 3 hours by republicans in a congressional hearing just this past april.

if there is no there there, explain why bush/cheney classified these images?
