Obama/The Pyramids

Obama Pyramids.jpg

Oh Giza.

I’m wondering if this becomes the (Stateside) lasting image of Obama’s trip. Like he went to Disneyland or the land of Jafar. On the other hand, images like this are like waving a red cape in the face of the wingnuts who can’t stand Obama’s popularity, his multinational self, his big vision (here’s what one of them makes of it) and especially, his escalating deconstruction of the war on terror/Islam.

And then, how does this image read in Egypt? Is it nothing but the perfunctory tourist snapshot? Or, is there some analogy to be drawn — in contradiction to “The Speech” — with America’s dynastic impulses?

And then, on a more practical level, what I don’t understand — on a day where Obama’s major, number one mission was to break down U.S. – Arab world stereotypes — was the business with the camels. Obama implied he was tempted, but told the press he wouldn’t hop up on one with reporters present. Smart move, but it didn’t stop his team. Unless acting out mixed-feelings (and given the baggage), I especially don’t know what got into Rahm.

Love the caption (my bold, their caps) and the speck of a guard, by the way.

You are always so grumpy. Your blog is developing toward the no humor zone surrounded by paranoia. Sometimes a camel is just a camel.

  • Gasho

My gut reaction to the shot above is that Obama is human. He’s a relatively young man [with a very important job] who is traveling around the world. He’s going to take a second a have his picture taken with the pyramids.. or pharaohs or whatever. He should. It’s the planet that he lives on and he’s seeing it’s sights. Good for him.
    Same for Rahm.

Arse, I mean, there’s always something up Rahm’s Arse, in case you don’t know. Deleted so much about reaching for a watch not there, and if he’s thinking it’s time for bed, or what? That if he could, he’d make an image of that of himself? “deconstruction of war” while increasing “defense” budget, so trade war on terror for what?

Ahh, BAG’s not completely humorless, is he?

  • Progressive Mom

Sometimes a tourist is just a tourist….sometimes a tourist is asking you if you must take your eye off the message, then place it on someone who isn’t the messenger. Rahm is a tourist and if you want the sideshow, he’s providing it. The meat is still in the message and Obama still isn’t on the camel (or in the headdress, or riding in the tank, etc., etc.)

  • Johanna

No, Rahm is not just a tourist. He is utterly lacking the dignity or sense of what is appropriate that his boss has. He really bears watching, with his absurdly infantile giggle, his reported high living and constant frequenting of Washington night spots. He has always seemed hectic, hyper, out of control and overcompensating with macho bravado for perhaps, having been a ballet dancer or gone to Sarah Lawrence. He will be a problem for the boss sooner or later, wait and see.

i don’t like rahm either. his comment about not letting a good crisis go to waste was downright rovian. but one piece i ran across in politico described rahm as going out to see a movie alone with only secret service personnel to keep him company. i wondered doesn’t he have any friends? where have you seen accounts about his being a party goer?

  • Mona

As an Egyptian, I can say that Giza is an amazing place. I like this picture… Obama actually looks younger. Camels are not easy to ride and if you suffer from vertigo, forget it!!

  • nightbird

Hear, hear camel. “Grumpy” and becoming predictably cynical.

Was Obama posing there, or … ? (At least he’s posing there, and not at Mt. Rushmore. At least not yet.)

But he does look good stoned, I’ll grant you that… )
(Oh, and your link to Slublog…Slublog does a fine job, doesn’t he? He’s an inspiration, really.)

  • Johanna

In reply to yg, yes, I agree with singling out the comment you did. It shows a real impulse to manipulate, rather than govern honestly. After all, why is a crisis a useful moment, except that you can PLAY on public chaos and fear. Is that not what was objected to in the wake of 9/11? I would add that even if Rahm thought this, he was unable to keep his mouth shut about it. He just had to flaunt his cleverness, and the power he has now to effect policy. The Wash. Post style section reports sightings of him from time to time. The latest was about a week ago. I forget where he was seen. It also reported he is putting his kids in the tony Maret School (at around 35,000 a piece yearly, for each of three kids) while calling upon others to sacrifice and “have skin in the game.” nice.

Rahm has more than one purpose. He went from the Clinton WH to a job making millions on Wall Street, so there’s his bailout friends to protect. Then, as a former Israeli Kibbutz member and Israeli soldier, he’s there to keep an eye and ear on the half-schvartza, goyim POTUS, of course. Then there’s all his corrupt friends in Chicago to payback. His plate is full.

Who is that, yg? Surely not Obama.
If it is BHO, then the artist must also be a veterinarian.

  • Nigel

Were you being serious when you called the War on Terror, the War on Islam? I hope not.

  • Ronna

Isn’t that the Sphinx? not the pyramids?
