Fireworks Over Baghdad

iraq fireworks.jpg

People watching fireworks above Baghdad in celebration of Tuesday’s withdrawal of U.S. troops from all Iraqi cities. (Click for larger size.)

Iraq-Anniversary-1

The cover of the NYT Week In Review on the fifth anniversary of the Iraq invasion. The photo captures the American bombing attack on Baghdad (otherwise branded as “Shock and Awe”) which initiated the war on the evening of March 19, 2003.

…And a related tweet.

Has there been an assessment of the outcome of the invasion of Iraq? I haven’t heard Republicans trumpeting it as a great success, but maybe it’s too soon. We didn’t hear that Vietnam was a victory until 10 years after it was over. The line went, It’s too bad the liberals made us pull out too soon.
If Vietnam is a precedent, scholarly articles will soon start questioning the conventional wisdom that Iraq was an ill-conceived and poorly executed disaster. Don’t laugh! Thirty years after the humiliating debacle that was Vietnam, right wingers hit upon what we did wrong – we were too nice.
If the war in Iraq is over, somebody should say something about it. Maybe there should be fireworks here.

Republicans are missing their opportunity; now is the time to both celebrate the military triumph in Iraq and to rage against Obama for losing the war in Iraq. Also, the demonstrations in Iran confirmed the Project for the New American Century predictions that an invasion of Iraq would set off the domino effect of democratic reform throughout the Middle East. The neocons were right all along. Bush was a visionary.

The young children in this photo have known nothing but war. This may just be their independence day – I especially like the red and white stripes on the shirt.. evoking OUR flag and when it stood for independence and freedom (way back when)..

You cannot compare Vietnam to Iraq. We lost the war in Vietnam because we did-not achieve our objective, keeping South Vietnam free. Iraq will go down in history as a victory…..perhaps an unpopular and costly one, but still a victory. We achieved our objective in Iraq by freeing the nation from a terrorizing dictatorship.
Republicans are not trumpeting our success in Iraq because it’s still perceived as a reckless decision. Another reason is because we don’t know yet what this victory will buy us. If Iraq becomes a strategic part of a change for peace and stability in the middle east, then our effort will have been proven noble and worth while. If Iraq has little or no effect on other nations in the region, then our war effort will have been proven noble, but costly and irresponsible. If Iraq heads down a dark path of war and instability again, then our war effort will have been proven a dismal failure. The problem is, it could take 30-50 years for any of these possibilities to be observed. Then it will take another 10-15 years for conclusions to show up in history books.
Our grandchildren will have it all figured out… :-)

For as many problems as our nation has, you have more independence here than anywhere else in the world. I’m not sure why you would make such a statement, unless you oppose the freedoms that we are losing under the current administration (freedom to chose your radio program, freedom to chose your healthcare, freedom to prevent your money from lining the pockets of financial executives or union organizers).
