White House Behind The Scenes: Euro Edition

4:7:09 Airforce 1 to Iraq.jpg
(click for full size)

The White House has just posted this 28 pic, “behind the scenes” photo gallery of Obama’s trip to Europe. With some exceptions, the series — “as advertised” — is particularly utilitarian. (I did especially like the photo of Air Force One enshrouded in fog. Maybe Souza’s message there, conveying humility, is that it’s not always so easy to see the way.)

This last shot was taken on the way to Iraq and features a nice cross-section of the senior brain trust, including NSC head Jim Jones left, Axelrod, Rahm and Gibbs. In terms of relationships, Axelrod, Rahm and Gibbs form a strong triangle with Rahm in the power spot (and Axelrod characteristically set back behind “the man”). One thing I was wondering, is it just the effect of the light, or is there a preponderance of blue shirts here, more suggestive of “group think” than “team of rivals.” And then, those crossed cords also made me also think about like, if inverted shapes.

To the extent the obvious one-liner here is “having one’s wires crossed,” I think Souza is saying the Administration’s sense of humor remains intact.

Whenever I see one of these photos I can’t help but be struck by the reminder that things are still being run by a room full of white guys wearing ties. Oh, wait, there is a woman in the back. There seems to be a photo like this in every group of White House “backstage” shots (and somehow the effect is only magnified when Obama or Clinton or Napolitano or whoever makes it into in the shot, because of the contrast that one exception sets up). I mean, it’s not surprising, I don’t know what could be done about it– Obama wanted, needed, people who had experience to help him. That means drawing people from the establishment. So of course you look at Obama’s “brain trust”, you’re going to see the establishment. But it still leaves one to wonder when we’re going to be able to drill down from the top and start changing the establishment itself.
Incidentally I think it is important to call attention to this photo from the linked gallery. CZECH REPUBLIC EAT YOUR FACE

I don’t know what Souza is saying, but when its comes to danger, usually everyone is on board. After Six years it still lights out, stealth and security for a safe landing in Baghdad.
Anyone recall Donald’s remark about the number six. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w67Bk9xAAT8

It gives me quite the ‘Danny Ocean’ vibe: lots of balls in the air, yet Rahm has it all at the tip of his finger.

I feel like I’m looking at a promo for a sitcom or a HBO Special.

…Somehow I messed up the HTML there and did not notice it. The photo I refer to in my final paragraph is this one.

This is a very dynamic photo.. there’s a lot going on. Nobody has pointed out that this is on an airplane, which adds another level of intensity to an already intense meeting. At the moment of the shot, we’re clearly waiting for “word” from whoever’s on the other end of the phone in the hands of “United States Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Joe Clancy” … so this meeting is all about getting Barack in and out of Bagdad without being harmed.
The fasten seatbelt sign seems to be lit. They must be getting close to arrival.. they’re working the details and as we know, everything worked out just fine : )
Now if only we had this many thinkers in the treasury department…
