America(n) Taken Hostage By Somali Pirates

pirates.650.1.jpg

I offer this image for two reasons — first, because it’s quite a descriptive photograph (or a photograph-within-a-photograph), and second, because it carries significance against the background of American might as under reconstruction by the Obama Administration.

In the picture, Andrea Phillips holds a photo of she and her husband, Richard Phillips. Phillips is the captain of a U.S.-flagged cargo ship hijacked today off the Horn of Africa in the first engagement between Somali pirates and a ship with an American crew.

Regarding the visual politics, I could easily see this image being used to shout out “America held hostage” — at least, in the Bush/Cheney “terror war” era. Given the new Administration, however, I’m hopeful (beyond securing the safe release of Capt. Phillips) that this incident will be understood and dealt with in more rational and localized terms.

(Note: Further analysis by BAGnewsNotes readers strongly suggests the analysis of this photo was clearly fishy and the third paragraph has been removed. The BAG, however, stands by the political take.)

Update 4/9/09 9:50 pm PST:

As Capt. Phillips remains in the custody of the pirates, the visual narrative continues.

Argh! “of she and her husband” should be “of her and her husband”. Objects of prepositions take the objective case not the nominative.

I think that’s actually a photo of her husband and one of their children. It looks as though the person behind him is wearing a backpack. If that’s the case, she’s covering the child’s face to protect the child’s identity.

Also, the “holiday cards” look like photos stuck to the refrigerator.

Wow. Grammar Police. You are good! I knew that “she and her husband” was incorrect, but I didn’t know why. And I teach ESL.

Hmm, good read. I was going by the rings, but the backpack, fingernail polish and maybe string-like wrist bracelet do suggest it’s his child, doesn’t it, which is also a good explanation for how she’s holding the snapshot. (As I’ve said repeatedly, The BAG is more of a seminar than lecture.) Thanks! I probably should have stuck to the “terror politics” on this one.

    The pirates backup plan ?
‘Mohamed Samaw, a resident of the pirate stronghold in Eyl, Somalia, who claims to have a “share” in a British-owned ship hijacked Monday, said four foreign ships held by pirates are heading toward the lifeboat. A total of 54 hostages are on two of the ships — citizens of China, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Tuvalu, Indonesia and Taiwan.’

First of all, “pirate” has such a retro, and insulting quality as a descriptive word. Call them something else — maybe “differently intentioned seafarers” or something. Speaking of them respectfully has got to be the first step. That might cause them to change their goal (getting loot) and join the community of nations,
