Peace Train

Biden Specter WH.jpg

Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too

Cause its getting nearer, it soon will be with you. *

Taken last week, this White House photo shows Biden and Arlen Specter on their way to Philly for the first meeting of the V.P.’s Middle Class Task Force.

It also reflects (in fact, broadcasts) at least two other things. One is Team Obama’s speed and momentum. The other is the Administration’s progress in exploiting wingnut wars to lay claim to the political middle. As Fatimah Ali says at the Philly.com, Specter may be in trouble in the polls and exposed on his right flank, but he has been on Capitol Hill for 29 years, he’s a survivor, and the guy definitely knows which way the wind’s blowing.

Blurry picture from the train. About as much blurry as the name “Middle Class Task Force.” Name of the task force is a great misnomer, but it serves a purpose to impress how much is going to be done for Middle class. All the members of the Middle Class Task Force are far from being middle class. Their salaries do not reflect that, but hey who in the government is middle class?
These two are politicians, have been in the same place for quite a while, so they have lot in common. They will work as long as it benefits both of them. Right now they are riding high.

    How traditional.
“Speed and momentum” A 5-minute video of the Shanghai Maglev train. The U.S. has a long, long way to go and a short time to get there.
You might also want to watch the world’s FASTEST train, a 2.5 minute video.

Now kos is speculating that Specter may do better as a dem.
    All hail, Dark Lord Kos.

These guys are working toward a bipartisan transition in favor of the Middle Class.
The two are shown highly engaged — intense eye contact, each leaning in toward the other (reaching across the table, so to speak). Specter appears to be making his case, Joe is definitely listening.
In contrast to the Big 3 CEOs and their private jets, they’re commuting by train. Not only is it a work-session, evidenced by the (overlooked, maybe?) papers, it’s a no-frills ride — only one coffee cup between them.
I think it’s notable that, not only are the Democrat and Republican traveling together, the senator has come to “Commuter Joe’s” turf to make the trip.

I see this as a metaphor for the Obama administration at this point in time… moving along at a rhythmic clip…
adults focused, cutting through the blur of “childish ways”… the noise from msm and republicans. That perception is better than the imagery of the former administration… a fully loaded semi trailer barreling down a mountain into a valley with its wheels falling off.
I think we can, I think we can, I think we can… chug-a-chug-chug

The first thing I thought of was that these two very high-up government officials are traveling on official business on a train, and NOT ON AN AIRPLANE. Really? They did not charter a plane? Or order up a helicopter? Not even a limo?
Good for them. Maybe things are changing after all.
Granted, I had to check Google maps to see how long of a trip this is (about 2 and a half hours, as it turns out). I’m still impressed that they took public transport instead of flying or riding in a limo. It tells me that maybe Biden does not think so much of himself that he would insist on some sort of special transportation arrangements.
But maybe its because the trip is so short that getting a limo or a helicopter just isn’t worth it. But again, for a politician to be so humble! Wow.

This is great publicity for Amtrak and public transportation in general. I know people like to criticize any attempt for politicians to help the middle class, but it’s nice to see that Biden actually walks the walk. Like Chris said, its impressive that they ride the train instead of the typical rich person transportation; they don’t have to take Amtrak. If other politicians follow suit, perhaps Amtrak will get some much needed funding and more favorable ratings from the general public who might be then more willing to support an increase in taxes for public transportation.

It appears with Biden leaning forward that the motion of the train from this perspective is right to left…nice progression.
I think that good things are bound to come…

  • stevelaudig

Biden should be throwing him off the train, not having a “lean in” chat with him. Specter has been a sabotagist for years. And Biden an enabler.

Someone needs to talk about the obvious. Their body language is closed to each other, although Biden’s hand isn’t clenched. It looks like the prelude to a duel.
As to Kos, who cares? People aren’t there for him, but for each other.
