She looks seriously uncomfortable in a very unnatural looking pose. Who sits that way in real life, body twisted, boobs pressed on the sofa arm, elbow sliding off? But good muscle definition on the arms, this lady works out!

ho hum,
I agree it looks like a most uncomfortable and contrived pose,
as a non believer I’ve found the Christian dictate:
‘The First Shall be Last and the Last Shall be First’,
helpful in expressing my occasional moments of cynicism.
However that this ‘First Lady’ designation is required or meaningful for my American cousins, so be it.
did they do something to michelle’s left arm? it doesn’t have the same sheen as the other one. i wanted to see more of the dress.
hrc looks like hours were spent on her sitting. it’s fussier. her dress looks like something venetian elites would wear.
it reminded me of her commissioned portrait from 2006, the one with the side profile: http://www.stephendcrouch.com/ginny_crouch_stanford.htm
which borrowed from this rennaisance painting: http://www.abcgallery.com/P/piero/piero39.html
i could say more about the contrast between the two, and what it suggests about character, but i don’t want to be mean.

She looks Beautiful. I have never seen a First Lady get so much scrutiny and critiscism as Michelle Obama. This nation has become very critical of others and does not look to see the good first in others first. They are critical of what they wear, what they say, how they say it, etc., etc. I wonder if everyone is so Perfect?

She looks fantastic! What a sad commentary that so many can’t simply appreciate it.

It’s interesting that the magazine’s hook for the Clinton issue is “fantasy” but the hook for Obama is “power.” Is that an expression of the difficult times we are in, the difference in how we perceive these two women, or is Obama featured in an issue on “power” because of how Clinton changed our perception of the role of First Lady, especially in light of how she used the role of First Lady in her bid to win the Presidency?
In any case, it’s nice to see a woman perceived as powerful in her own right although she is married to a powerful man.

I don’t love this. Her facial expression is softer and more demure than the forceful, engaging natural Michelle we’ve seen on the campaign and at the innauguration. What I’ve always liked about her is that she can embody intelligence and strength in such a healthy way.

Ms. O looks a heck of a lot more real than most of the woman I’ve seen on the cover of this magazine. That’s saying something, considering that in photo shoots for high-dollar glamour publications, the model is little more than a piece of clay to be manipulated by the set designer, stylist, makeup person, lighting person, photographer and production supervisor. She looks beautiful! Every time I see this woman I think she is so impressive. I hope she’ll have a chance to shine.

Unnatural? And Clinton looks relaxed? Hillary looks so Life mag, from the 60’s! Michele might not look entirely comfortable, but those arms are formidable!

I like the shot. It’s not a pose you could hold, but has connotations both of sensuality/sexuality and of comfortable glamor of the girls-chatting variety — seems the perfect blend for Vogue. She looks like a real person, but also Somebody to Keep an Eye On! )

just helping her man
Jason Wu, the young designer of Obama’s white inaugural gown and the magenta dress she wears in Vogue, credits the first lady with reinvigorating the industry.
“In her own way, she is like a *stimulus package* for the fashion industry,” Wu said.
