Most elegant about Michelle Obama (as exemplified in these photos of a recent visit to the Interior Department) is the way she so seamlessly moves between the sure political voice, the easy-going epitome of style and the keenly sensitive social/cultural advocate.

Why is it that women can get away with native costumes — worn for political effect — that men shouldn’t be caught dead in?

Saw her twice here in NM – once with military wives, second time on the plaza in Las Vegas, NM. Both times she came across totally real, present, beautiful, intelligent and politically astute in her policy summations – a true gem.

Two words come to mind every time I watch either Michelle or Barack Obama: Grounded + Amplitude. They both seem so completely centered and grounded, so wholly themelves that they don’t get knocked off balance. At the same time, their energies are big – often the biggest in the room, so the room resonates with them. It makes for effortless authenticity, no matter what they are doing.

I think what folks sometimes miss or choose to ignore is that if one is a true activist, raised and trained as such, the juncture between political voice and social/cultural advocacy is seamless. The elegance, perhaps, is another issue. There are truly not that many real activists that get the exposure and attention that Michelle Obama gets.
