Out Of Lincoln, Etc.

Obama Lincoln.jpg

Some concert notes….

As the inauguration show kicks off in Washington, this photo offers the Obamas walking down the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial as part of the HBO “We Are One” extravaganza. The way Obama aligns with the statue visually plays with the sense that Obama actually emanates from his hero or is in some way his descendent.

This shot, on the other hand, by the NYT’s Doug Mills (via The Caucus ), makes it seem like 16 has his arm, or cloak, around 44.

And then, so much for metaphors as the incoming administration is seen to reanimate the American eagle.

I know what he’s doing….sending a message to Congress that he is powerful and needing to get his way, but it’s rather over the top for me.

Lincoln looks stunned & surprised, eyes practically popping out of his head, as he watches what is unfolding at his feet.

This aspect, on the other hand, will never get old:

while everybody references lincoln, fdr or mlk, i see obama as a product and extension of saul alinsky. odd how pundits never mention his influence.

karen, perhaps all the symbolism (posing with former presidents, alignments with lincoln) is meant to cement his legitimacy of office, for those unwilling to accept or in stunned disbelief in the fact that we have a black president. certainly it’s powerful imagery for those abroad. imagine all the oppressed minorities in other countries drawing inspiration from it.

…the sense that Obama actually emanates from his hero or is in some way his descendent.
Political photo opportunities never lie, of course, but it just might be a little too early to tell. May many of the things that marked Lincoln I’s administration not repeat themselves. Give Obamaham another 144 years and perhaps we’ll know.
Heroes are a good thing, but mostly when observed from the future.

i wanted to kvetch about being denied seeing the concert, unable to watch on cnn because hbo bought up the rights to coverage, and how that was disdainful of the grassroots. but then i noticed dish network is offering me free hbo, with the concert getting ready to air in 40 minutes. are people on others systems getting the same deal?

tell that to the little boy in a tree.
The little boys and girls learn it by themselves soon enough: I just hope the big boys and girls already know it.

And no wonder: Actor Jack Black speaks in front of the Lincoln Memorial…
Maybe Lincoln appreciated the Rockettes more eight years ago: he was a little younger then.

Lincoln, majestic and proud seems to be staring down on Obama with approval. But, also with a stern look on his face as if saying keep up the promise. The first shot is a breathtaking. It seems as if a “father” is looking down approvingly and with satisfaction on his “children.”

I didn’t realize until this evening that the HBO/Lincoln Memorial show was produced by the same guy who has done many of the Superbowl Halftime gigs. The LA (Hollywood) Times has the story.

yg (and karen)–i can also see the symbolism as cementing him as prez in a way GWB couldn’t & didn’t, given that his 2000 ‘legitimacy’ as prez was nothing without the supreme court, who, in many eyes, were flawed and/or biased. This symbolism may mean something, in the days/weeks/months/years to come, as we, as the populous, reconcile ourselves to BO’s agenda & goals–its much easier to feel disenfranchised and or ‘ignored’ with the former situation than the latter. in this case, to me, it seems that we are continuously being encouraged to ‘take part,’ wherein we are no longer simply ‘voters’ but are now both advocates and ‘positioned’ individuals. while it may not position all of us on BO’s side, i see his agenda (if this is intentional) as forcing US to HAVE A POSITION, which makes us, inherently, more active participants in the whole thing, and in some sense, responsible for the outcome. honestly, i like this. a way bigger ‘burden’ to the individual, but also, more response & reflection on the individual state, i think.
