Obama Going MAD

(click for full size)

Obama Mad Magazine Cover.jpg

It’s a classic send-up of how — Obama not just performing in a crisis atmosphere, but in a more full-blown, post-newspaper, 24/7 news cycle than any of his predecessors — it’s government by hour glass.

And then, what happened to good old hard work?

The George Washington Obama cover belongs right next to this one. One says “help us,” the other “help me.” I knew our panic was collective, it’s funny to think that Obama could share in it.
I remember from childhood that there were often many things to look at with a Mad cover….time hasn’t changed things. Is one corner of the file on left blood stained? And the “see no evil…” trio on the Tribune is hilarious.

what’s amazing about this parody is how entirely OPPOSITE it is from what we’ve seen!
we’ve seen obama smiling and hard at work at an empty oval office desk.
perhaps this is the ultimate projection by most of the rest of us – “who would want that job?”

He needs a shave, he’s stressed out, he’s facing crisis upon crisis. A likely part of what’s going on inside of this extraordinary man. MAD does it again!

I really like this cover. I find it reassuring, precisely because it’s completely implausible. As matt notes, it’s the opposite of everything we’ve seen of Obama, which makes it okay to laugh, and even makes it feel good to laugh. What an absolute relief to know that our President is equal to his task. Just imagine if it were McCain in this illustration and you’ll see what I mean. I know how fawning this sounds, but this would not be funny if we had elected a lesser man. All I have to say is, thank God it’s funny.

Lots of maddening, frustrating tasks on the Desktop — he’ll need all the help he can get:

The success of any promising new Employee is not determined by hope or hard work, but by results. Let’s give him a job review in say, four years, after we see how many things have changed.

I like this cover, too – not because it represents Obama’s reaction accurately (as pointed out above) but that it does represent the state of affairs quite well. It’s a marker; a starting point. We can remember these images when we’re trying to critique his performance 4 and 8 years from now.
“Remember what a sh*tstorm Obama started with? We’ve [hopefully] come a long way…”
