Oh, Christmas Tree

Yet in they dark streets shineth, the everlasting light

The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

I hope I’m not casting too dark a shadow on the holiday. (I do have a more lyrical image for Christmas day.)

After weeks of violence in Athens following the shooting death of a teenager by Greek police, protesters have been persistently trying to defile the city’s Christmas tree in Syntagma Square. (The previous tree was burned down by rioters back on the 8th.) Apparently, the prolonged outrage over the incident is being fueled by deep seated frustration over the world-wide economic crisis, rising unemployment and government corruption.

I find these images brilliantly unsettling, the fanciful lights and ornaments juxtaposed with officers of the state. Nothing draws a greater contrast between the simultaneous fancy and tense uncertainty in the air this week than riot police guarding Christmas trees, as well as troopers in full riot gear dashing past outsized toy soldiers. And yes, that is the head of a pig, its appearance seeming to mock the holiday banquet out of reach for so many.

just curious about the significance of the pig head in the first frame.
long ago used as a weapon ( they explode if lit on fire )
why to the athens police have it?

Funny…as an American, the 1st thing I thought of when I saw the pig['s head] was: agitprop against the cops – you know, “Kill the pigs” as they used to say, back in the day…I just figured this was more local, symbolic protest against the police/state.

I don’t find the images unsettling at all. They seem to capture the precise essence of the times. Maybe some of us are having a harder go of it than others. Or just more realistic. There is a lot of real-time trouble in the world and a facade of tinsel and wrapping paper doesn’t appease me in the least. I am ready to see more heads roll than just the pigs.
Bush, Cheney, Madoff, Rove, Limbaugh, Ted Stevens, Inhofe, Coleman, Harry Reid, Sarah Palin, ………… jeez, I could do this till New Years.

I can’t wait for tomorrow’s image. You promised better.
These suck inasmuch as they feed off the easy pickings that commerce has made of the time of year.
