Headed For Afghanistan

Obama Mosul.jpg

It’s an evocative image, Veterans Day or not.

It was taken at the U.S. military’s Forward Operating Base in Mosul on election night. On the screen, Obama is giving his acceptance speech. In the background, U.S. Army Sgt. Patrick Kopecky from Manitowoc, WI. is calling home.

What first attracted me to the image was the sense of relief that Iraq planning will soon be out of neocon hands. As for Sgt. Kopecky, it’s impossible to say whether the election had any relation to his call. On the other hand, I can just imagine him telling folks back home he’s sure he’s headed for Afghanistan.

Obama never looks the people, or the camera straight in the eye. One side to the other, never in the middle. Is it humility, evasiveness, lack of confidence? Needs to practice doing this…. stare someone in the eyeballs till they look away.
On the other hand, shrub can look you in the eye and lie his guts out.

The soldier looks like he’s saddened in the background.
    “What’s the difference?”
Obama is still a Face on a screen to this guy. He can still be ignored while he makes his call.

when you’re in the military you don’t tell your family where you will be headed or even where you THINK you’ll be headed. security reasons.
