Cheneys Meet Bidens At The Doorstep

Cheneys-Bidens-1.jpg

Are these four people really in the same picture?

Reminds me of that line: Dems fall in love, Repubs fall in line.

Yes, compared to Joe Biden, Dick Cheney looks a little stiff, but compared to my general perception of him, he looks like Santa Claus.

  • pk

Lynn looks like Mary Kay Place as Chairman Mao.

  • http://theforgottenwar.blogspot.com Sergei Andropov

That’s a kind of frightening expression Cheney has on his face.

  • jonst

I swear, I don’t know why they waste their time with this bullshit. Oh, I’m aware of the proffered reason….ceremonial and all that stuff. But one would think, that on occasion, rare occasion, the effort is not only not worth the candle…it is not worth the wick. Cheney should be arrested and held for investigation. Yeah, yeah, I know, hot headed blog commenter. Does not know how the real world works, and all that shit. ‘we gotta move on’ ‘work to do’ ‘look to the future’ ‘don’t criminalize political disputes’……yeah, yeah, yeah. Bullshit.

    Jonst,
One reason for doing this has to be to differentiate our system from other alternative ways of doing it. Think of Soviet Russia (perhaps even today’s Russia) and how the “transfer of power” was accomplished there; that’s only one example.
So, Mr. and Mrs. Biden’s visit helps to keep the streets or alleyways from running red. I applaud the effort.
Now, come 2009, let’s go ahead and hold Mr. Cheney for investigation and then arrest him, if found guilty under due process. (Though he may deserve a few months at Guantanamo.) That would make sense to me, in that order.

Of course I know next to nothing about her, but Jill Biden has such a sunny, warm presence.

  • KansasKowboy

You either have to have real tough skin or else not give a damn to be a politician. I think Biden and his wife have tough skin and the Cheney’s just don’t give a damn.

This photo and that of the Bush/Obama photo op in front of the White House makes me wish for a better news photo search engine. It would be fascinating to look at like photos of any Gore/Cheney, Clinton/Bush photo ops (if they occurred) for a “before and after” view.

  • Kris T

Cheney’s expression makes me think he’s thinking, “you might be getting the house, but you ain’t getting the secrets…”

  • Puka

What’s up with the red markings on the photo? Are they supposed to indicate some photoshopping?

  • ST

Jonst–the reason we do this is that our country is somewhat unique in the world where power transfers peacefully. Think Kenya, Zimbabwe, etc. Much better to have an artificial photop than a riot. I agree with Antonio. I had an Argentine au pair living with me in DC for the last election and she was afraid to leave the house because she could not believe it would be safe, especially given the major changes in Congress.

The Bidens look alive. The Cheneys… lifeless. The Bidens ready for the Boardwalk. The Cheneys for the waxworks. The Bidens warm, bright, intelligent. The Cheneys… reptilian. Proof of the theory of differential evolution for one species, I suppose.

Uh, one couple is still having sex, and the other isn’t.

Uh, one couple is still having sex, and the other isn’t.
Ha! The Bidens have always struck me as that Couple Who Can’t Keep Their Hands Off Each Other. They’ve been married for like 30 years but still act like newlyweds. The Obamas are like that, too.
It will be quite a refreshing change from the dour and sexless George/Laura and Dick/Lynn pairings.

  • mommybrain

Jill Biden and michell Obama both wore power red to their assignations.

    Antonio and ST,
Your points are well taken. But they present a false dichotomy. It is not of question of lining up for this bullshit….or having ” the streets or alleyways…running red”. i.e. either stand for this farce or see the streets run red with blood’. People who frame life that way often end up encountering their own worst fears. There would be nothing wrong with sending a quiet, dignified, message that “THIS TIME”, you don’t get the social niceties. ‘This time we disdain you. Peacefully. And silently. But resolutely. But rest assured, you will be treated fairly under the law. We don’t want the streets running red with blood, after all. And THAT is why we enforce the law against all. High and low.[‘
Otherwise…where the law is not enforced, blood WILL run in the streets. As, it might be pointed out, it is doing in a great many parts of the world. Caused, to a limited extent, anyway, by the lawless actions of this administration.

ST: “Somewhat unique” in a peaceful transfer of power? I think all of EUROPE might beg to differ.
Cheney’s smirk shows he knows he’s looted the nation, he won’t be prosecuted in any manner (I’m taking bets, people), and that we will NEVER know the whole truth of anything that transpired since and including 9/11/01.
And sometimes it is a good thing for the streets to run red. The Romanians knew what to do.

the red is very interesting-reflects Michelle’s dress & even their color choices on election night. beyond being visually impacting (compared to browns & pale greens), does it also say something about either speaking to and representing the red states, or an effort to evoke some sense of power, control, agressiveness, to reassure the public about the coming months?
